Bella ...I can't let her go. Nothing has happened that particularly promises a successful season. Bella comes and goes like clockwork. Reliability is her thing - or the comfort of home. :whistling:

Today she tweeted after her arrival in the morning. Actually, she occasionally does that the night before she leaves. Bella was otherwise fast-paced, alert. I'm hoping Copper was around. At least one male. It remains exciting with the beauty.

Today I saw a video from February last year. There we see both owls in the box. So maybe it's worth scrolling through the nights (for my daytime time zone) in the timeline in the future.

Bella's clockwork still works today.
And also today she called up on her return to the pits in the morning. And during the night in the Netherlands several males in the forest called for the female tawny owl (like last night here https://youtu.be/sCQtBcumUuo), Bella could not hear an answer.
I hope a male will present himself in the next few days. Bella scanned her box like everything was new to her.

The male comes to the nest, the female had previously left. The egg was unattended.

What a joy to see the couple again... so sweet. :rotf: :innocent:

For my understanding I have to ask: Isn't this nest actually an Osprey nest? :puzzled: I think I've covered the owls a number of times over the past year, starting a romance there in the absence of the Osprey (through migration).

Or is it another nest?
Then the owls would have established themselves after all, which will not please the resident Osprey when they return.
Polly, :hi: here are all info you need :D
About the Savannah Great Horned Owls
During the Fall of 2014, a pair of Great Horned Owls began frequenting this recently abandoned Bald Eagle nest adjacent to a protected, nutrient-rich salt marsh along the Georgia coast. The nest sits nearly 80′ above one of the six Audubon International Certified golf courses at The Landings, on Skidaway Island, near Savannah, Georgia. Over the course of 2015 and 2016, a pair of owls successfully fledged four owlets from the site, but they did not return to breed in 2017
Instead, a pair of Ospreys began renovating the nest and committed to breeding at the same site from 2017 to 2019, when the dead tree that held the nest was removed due to being designated as a falling hazard. A new nest site was erected in an adjacent tree in the fall of 2019, and the Ospreys were quick to take up residence in 2020 and 2021.

In January 2022, a pair of Great Horned Owls returned to the cam site to nest for the first time since 2016.

Great Horned Owls are fierce predators that hunt a diverse assortment of prey. They are generally nocturnal hunters, but will also hunt in broad daylight. Throughout the nesting period, the owls may arrive at the nest site with meals of small- to medium-sized mammals, reptiles, fish, and birds of all sizes.

Female Great Horned Owls spend most of the time at the nest caring for eggs and owlets while males hunt for food. After fledging, young may remain with their parents for 3–4 months before dispersing from natal territories.

Thanks @Liz
In fact, I've found out the same thing in the meantime. Well, the arrival of the Osprey won't be very pleasant. I hope they don't take any claims.

Everything is going well for the new couple in the Netherlands. I really think now there's going to be serious intent here.
Today:
The male lands 17:47:20 (seen via external camera) It's waiting, looking around, looking in the box....

Live outdoor:
https://youtu.be/a4mdXyxSa6E

Then the female seems to come into view.
17:57:40 The male moves impulsively into the box. When the female lands on the branch in front of the box at 17:57:54, a male full of fervor can be heard inside.

A little owl in love ... :innocent:

The female does not come into the box. It wakes up outside.
Image

18:00:48 she flies away while the euphoria of the male can still be heard inside the box. He will one day have dug through the wooden floor...

I don't know if it's the female's mate. Most likely.
Recently two males could be heard calling in the forest.

The female has been visiting box 1 regularly every day for weeks.

I think the boxes are a few meters away with the feeding station in the visual triangle. So everyone watching the feeding station can hear the owls.

Live to the feeding station - the marketplace  , so to speak (from here you can find the other cameras)

It seems to stick to one egg.
Feeding seems to take place mostly outside the nest.
Yesterday:
17:56 Female leaves the nest calling. (The camera zooms in on the large pine tree in the background. The female can be seen there.)
18:08 back
03:24 hastily from a nest, calling The male lands on the upper branch, looks into the nest and leaves again.
03:35 The female returns, calling.
The male rarely brings food to the nest.

Spring is a long time coming for Bella. At least there are no calls from a Mr. Bella (Copper).
There's still time...

It's worth seeing her arrivals and departures just for Bella and her facial expressions. :innocent:

Tawny owl - De Mortel

The tawny owls in the Netherlands remain in spring fever.
13:21 the male could be heard well even in daylight.

My goodness... that's where I would be right now.

At dusk, crows announce the presence of the male. Although the female is still in the box, the angry nagging of the crows is familiar to me from the Goshawk nest. Where crows gurgle, a grab isn't far.

From 17:39:28 the crow mob can also be seen.
(Male also calls)

Some owls experience the upcoming spring and the approaching breeding season differently. Certainly also due to different climatic conditions.

Bella was super nervous again this morning when she got to her box.
And as so often, the scrutinizing look from above down into their empty nest shell. No mouse...no bird...no present...no Copper? No male for Bella?
Here it remains exciting.

Tawny owl - De Mortel

The male repeated and stubborn visited box 2 that night. ...while the female has preferred box 1 for weeks and stays there every day. Who will decide and where will the chicks grow up?

17:16 Today the female left the protective cover of her box ( 1 :whistling: ) in daylight.
She sat calmly, listening to her surroundings.

17:31 Mr. Tawny owl calls and - she jumps back into her box. :rotf:

No, for today she couldn't lure the male for a joint inspection and there was no present either.

17:43 The female flies into the terrain ...

17:46 The eerily beautiful calls of the male can be heard.

17:55 ....and the excitement of the crows is pretty close too. So the couple is still off-road.

In Box 2? :whistling:

Tawny owl - De Mortel

Was the call and the presence of the tawnys so beautiful and almost natural...the laying of the eggs would not have been far.

The day before yesterday there was an incident that a pine tree fell not far from box 1. Well, (male) voices could also be heard some time before, but they didn't bother the girl much. However, falling the tree was too much. (No, there wasn't a storm yet. That came later.)

The female left the box in a hurry and has not returned to this day. A real shame....

Everything is going well for the little owls in the offspring planning. :shake:

It remains exciting for Bella too... no spring-like messengers in the firm of a willing male.

Back to Bella...
Unfortunately, a star ventured too far into Bella's castle today. He paid for his curiosity with his life.

The chat is now unlocked. That is new. It must have happened in the last few hours.
There is talk of hunger. But I think the explanation that makes sense is that Bella quite simply doesn't tolerate any intruders. Unlike in an open nest, she is surprised (asleep). She reacts instinctively. If Bella had chicks in the box, she must also react quickly to defend lives. Therefore, approaching partners usually announce themselves. In order not to get hurt.

The star lies untouched.

Addendum:

Bella left her box at dusk as usual - without having touched the starling or taking it with her. She only returned later that evening and emptied her box.

Image

However, I can leave good news here:
Copper is still present. He is also said to be heard when communicating with his partner Bella. However, Copper mostly lingers a good distance away in an overgrown area and his calls don't seem to reach the camera/mic well.
Very fine ...so the pair is fully counted.

So the first egg can be expected - when the time comes. :shake:

The Internet supply is still being worked on here. Some streams (Tawny's both cameras and Feeding station) are therefore still canceled.

The female still did not return to the box. The shock and distrust are probably very deep.
However, the couple is said to have sat near the box today and called.

Let's keep our fingers crossed....tight.
