18:30 Kaia is still alone at home and patiently incubating
Image

18:39 Who's there?
Image

Nobody important, apparently. :D

18:43 Kaia gets up, shakes her plumage and turns the eggs.
Image

Some nest-care, some scratching, more egg-turning and back on the eggs at 18:44:25

Swenja, not me, but the internet is an encyclopaedia

It's dinner time here

I wonder if Karl II is doing a reconnaissance flight for food today?
Then Kaia would have to stay in the nest until tomorrow.

Maybe he'll come soon.

Yes, that’s possible.
If Karl II doesn’t come home this evening, I’ll check where he is (in OrniTrack), and what he has been doing today, Swenja.

Kaia stands up, loosens the nestfloor, preens and covers the eggs again.

Kaia observes something. She stands up.

It's nothing threatening. She covers the eggs again.

The OrniTrack information.

Karl II spent a lot of time today not far from the nest, along a brook about 1.5 km from the nest.
At 14:53 he decided to move on a bit further and flew to what I think is a small wet area (possibly a little pond or a series of shallow little ponds) near another brook.
Since 15:08 he is at that place, about 13.5 km from the nest.
At 20:33 (last known data) he was still in that area.

13.5 km can easily be flown in 15 to 25 minutes (depending on wind and flying speed), so maybe Karl II will still appear at the nest before it is completely dark.
If Karl II does not come home tonight, Kaia will have a very long shift.

Thanks for the track data. @Anne7
Then it remains exciting whether Karl II returns in the evening. There's still some time.

Kaia seems to be getting ready for the night.

22:16 up again!
There’s some problem/threat around. I hear some kind of “barking” nearby. It’s not a dog.
What is it? Hooting? :puzzled: :help:

22:16 until 22:22
Kaia is “freezing”. She hardly moves. She is standing in a defensive posture above her eggs.
Image

At 22:22:12 She covers her eggs. She still looks frightened/vigilant.
Image

22:30 Relaxing again?
Image

Good night, Swenja
Good night, everyone

Is that an very silent owl calling? :puzzled:

22:20:34 A shadow flies through the forest from right to left behind.

Image

20:24 Kaia covers the eggs and is very stresst.

00.21.16 while Kaia was up, taking care of the eggs and poking in the nestbowl......
again, Kaia was hissing and beak clattering

then back down on her eggs.

Since then it was quiet, it's now 3 a.m.
At an intervall of approx. each hour Kaia got up taking care of the eggs and aerating the bowl.

It's raining a little. It's very quiet at the nest today.

Image

Karl II? What do you doing?
He daydreams and suddenly jumps up. The rain got heavier.
Image

Image

Kaia will probably not come to the nest today? The rain probably won't stop as long as it's light.
