Foundation for Nature invites all nature lovers to observe the breeding ecology of the Great Grey Owl’s family in their natural habitat. This is the first on-line transmission from the nest of this species in Poland. This brood is located in eastern Poland (Polesie, Lublin region). It should be noted that due to technical reasons, related to the power supply of the system as well as access to the Internet, the transmission may be limited in time. Foundation For Nature will do its best to maintain the transmission.
The short story of this brood:
The nest was built on a pine tree most likely by the Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo). During the previous breeding season this nest was not used by any species of bird. In April 2022 the Foundation for Nature team observed a female of Great Grey Owl incubating eggs at the nest. On 11 May 2022 there were probably two few days old chicks. On 17 May 2022 the camera installation took place. At this stage of the nestling period the female still guards and warms the offspring loudly begging for food. The main task of the male is to hunt for prey within the breeding territory and deliver mainly small mammals to the nest. The female starts to fly out from the nest for short periods, helping the male to get food.
