The caterpillar can be seen on the forebranch as Margit birdwatches.

Image

Image

05:08:03 - Margit catches sight of someone flying by the eyrie and perhaps alighting nearby. She calls softly at them. Continuing off and on for five plus minutes now.

Helju arrives with a female anatid or one of immature plumage. Its beak has been torn from its face.

11:33:13 - Five hours and forty seven minutes away, Helju arrives with empty talons. She heralds her mate and his not-so-empty-talons. Margit moves to mantle over the duck carcass already in the nest.

Image

11:35:37 - Helju begins vocalizing to Kalju.

Kalju arrives with a northern lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) chick. This will be the best glimpse we have been provided of this species, as the chick is still alive. For the time being it stays dead still.

11:41:22 - Margit begins trilling to Helju.

Image

11:42:41 - She lays it on thick. The literature does not well describe this vocalization, I don't think. It seems to lump it in with the rattle-chirp, a vocalization of stress. The rattle-chirp can be heard when being attacked, handled by humans, in uncomfortable temperatures, or even protesting maternal affections, etc. It does seem to be related to this trilling, if at a higher intensity. But. I suspect there is more to this trilling. Context and intensity. Imagine a completely different species, mammalian even, but one we are more familiar with, the grey wolf by way of the domesticated dog. Imagine the different contexts that one might hear, say, "whimpering". It might be vocalized in situations of extreme anxiety, but also when encouraging puppies to gather close. I don't really know, but it seems to me that the context in which we sometimes hear this trilling does not always match the stress descriptions of the rattle-chirp. I have noticed when golden eaglets have had their fill of food, they not uncommonly begin this call. Is it the discomfort from being so stuffed? It's interesting. I want to understand.

11:43:23 - Helju enters the nest.

11:44:34 - And here we learn that the northern lapwing chick is still very much alive.

Image

Image

11:45:52 Helju kills and eats most of the lapwing.

First fed bite of duck.

Image

Image

12:10:34 - Last fed bite.
12:17:12 - Helju finishes feeding herself.
12:23:53-12:26:05 - Stream interruptions. Somewhere in this timeframe, Helju leaves the eyrie.
