Calypso

Calypso was waiting patiently in the hope that her mate would share his fish...it certainly was big enough to share

2022.07.28 - Calypso is still calling into her favourite perch in Tulka to have a meal. There was another Osprey just leaving as I arrived so still not sure who she is always with.

Calypso is eating well - not sure if the other bird with her is her mate or “Mum”

In 2019 Calypso (Blue Band) was one of the first two South Australian Osprey chicks fitted with coloured bands. Both chicks were from the Barge. The second chick Star (Yellow Band) disappeared soon after fledge. It is so good to see Calypso still in the area and even better that for the past year she has been travelling in company with a male Osprey. The pair are often seen near Tullka and particularly like a dead tree perch where they can catch the morning sun and keep an eye on the nearby fishing grounds. Its possible that either this season or next they will look to mate - how good will that be!! Tulka is one of the areas being considered for an artificial nesting platform as it is a good foraging area but lacks tall trees or cliffs for nesting.

Calypso (top) and her mate were enjoying the late afternoon in their favourite perch near Tulka yesterday. It was good to see her after a few weeks of not having an update.

Tumby Island Love Shack (aka Osprey Platform)

6/3
https://www.facebook.com/portlincolnosp ... Cg164rawdl
Operation “Tumby Island Love Shack” (Osprey Platform) is in full swing. Ian has filed the paperwork, overcome the barriers and coordinated the troops. The awesome crew from Ardrossan Community & Men's Shed have worked tirelessly for the past week donating more than 100 hours to this project alone and it is their seventh platform. Ardrossan Earth Works came along to do the loading - thank you 🙏. Frank Garvey Crash Repairs have loaned us the trailer.
Bazz and Fran have driven 750 km today to pick it up and will deliver it back to Tumby tomorrow (another 750) for installation later this week. It takes the whole state to save a species

Phase 2 of Operation Tumby Island Love Shack...(aka Osprey Platform) today. After a briefing from Ian Falkenberg (Friends of Osprey Group) about what would be required to prepare the site and Peter Wilkins (DEW) about respecting the Conservation Park we made our way to Tumby Island. A group of volunteers formed a human chain to ferry equipment ashore under the watchful eye of Osprey Partney and Marrum from the nest site. Once at the site 2 metre holes were dug for the sleeves that will hold the nest platform. The top third of the existing nest will be transferred to the new platform. Partney did a couple of fly pasts to be sure she approved of the new arrangements and within an hour of us leaving she was back on the nest to check progress. Curtis's Sales & Service helped out to place the cement block on the back of the ute ready for the helicopter to lift the block and platform out to the Island tomorrow. Tomorrow we will have a nesting platform installed ready for the season safe from foxes and rats.

Successful installation of first elevated Osprey Platform on Eyre Peninsula at Tumby Island Conservation Park.
Well finally we can report that everything has gone according to plan and the Tumby Island Love Shack (aka Osprey Platform) has been installed at Tumby Island. None of this would have been possible with out the support of so many people and we would like to send our heartfelt thanks to the following people especially.....you have contributed to a project of which you should be very proud.

2022.06.09 - It's a great feeling when so many people from our community give their time to help ensure the success of this project. We were lucky enough to have Mark from Missing Link Media come along to capture this story for all to see.

2022.06.10 - Marrum & Partney have certainly given their new high rise 'Love Shack' the seal of approval. They have been working non stop to get it just how they want it ready for this season.

2022.07.31 - Tumby Island - Your days are numbered Mr Fox! This was at 7.13pm tonight. So lucky to have been able to install the 'highrise' for this season.

Can you spot the two, four day old Silver Gulls. Already running around - and right at the base of the Tumby Island Osprey nest. It is also on the edge of a very high cliff. I'm amazed at how often Mum leaves them alone to wander - especially with the white Bellied Sea Eagles that are around.

2022.06.04 - Tumby Island - Even tho I'm not a fan of Silver Gulls - I do think it is interesting watching the young chicks at the base of the Tumby Island Osprey platform. Obviously Mr Fox is no longer visiting or these chicks would have been 'dinner' by now.

Ervie

8/9
https://www.facebook.com/portlincolnosp ... 754851402/
2022.08.09 - Driving home this morning I looked over and could see Ervie once again at Delemere. A quick detour and I was lucky enough to watch him have several attempts at catching a fish. He struggled to get out of the water his fish was so big. After several attempts he flew just above the water to the vacant land where he could finally enjoy his catch.

For weeks we have been telling Ian Falkenberg how great it was to be able to go 5 minutes from home and watch Ervie & Dad looking and even catching fish. Today, as Ian drove into Port Lincoln I phoned him to tell him to call by Delemere and Ervie & Dad showed him how special they really are.

2022.07.29 - How lucky are we to go 5 minutes from home and sit and watch Ervie catch his fish and then bring it to the lightpole right beside your car and eat it.

Yesterday we spent an hour or so with Ervie at Delamere (Port Lincoln Marina). We wish he had a nice dead tree to perch in to hunt instead of this sewerage breather with sharp spikes but its a popular perch and he seems to have worked it out. He had five or six attempts at catching a fish - imagine the energy required for each dive. Eventually he landed a small Mullet and went up on to a light to eat.

Bazz Hockaday has been out and about checking out our resident Osprey this week. We had a call from Ike at Poonindie who reported that Pro had flown in with breakfast and the fish was so big she was keeping half of it for dinner. Ervie has been up and down the foreshore still this week - reckon he could do with some fishing lessons from Pro since he mostly seems to be catching Puffer Fish still.

Port Lincoln - Mom and Dad

6/10
https://www.facebook.com/portlincolnosp ... 053956179/
2022.06.09 - Dad must have been watching the weather report and heard that rain was forecast so he's been out collecting a black plastic bag to keep them dry. Wonder how long before the green rope appears this season.

6/30
https://www.facebook.com/portlincolnosp ... 348890155/
2022.06.28 - I guess the arrival of the first piece of green rope heralds the start of another season!

7/11
https://www.facebook.com/portlincolnosp ... 108701490/
2022.07.11 - Not sure if Dad has been doing another beach clean up or he is bringing in a rain coat for Mum to keep dry in this wet weather - either way the white plastic will have to find its way into a bin.

7/13
https://www.facebook.com/portlincolnosp ... 825143559/
2022.07.13 - It's nice to see that every time Dad comes in for a little 'loving' he flies off and returns with a gift.

7/19
https://www.facebook.com/portlincolnosp ... 948411871/
2022.07.19 - Dad still thinks the nest needs more structure.

7/30

2022.07.30 - Not exactly sure what Dad was up to but Mum was clearly not impressed.

2022.08.10 - Ever wondered what an Osprey egg looked like? Well now you know. Check out what the egg looks like in the night vision - all white and then in day light - a lot of markings. Still waiting for the second egg to arrive.

2022.08.12 - The egg may be laid several days apart but Mum doesn't start incubating them until she has laid them all. It's midnight and she is standing on the side of the nest.

Fran Solly > Friends of Osprey
In some terrific news approval has been given for Ian Falkenberg to satellite track 4 Osprey in South Australia this year. Approvals need to be given by the Bird and Banding Ethics Committee and requests are carefully considered.
Satellite tracking is an important tool in the Recovery of Osprey in South Australia it has provided information about where chicks go once they have fledged and left the nest. We are able to monitor where they fish, distances they fly and sadly but importantly it also allows us to record mortalities. The record of mortalities is assessed to ensure they are not the result of banding or tracking and so far we are quite certain there is no impact from tracking or banding.
Which birds are tracked and banded will depend on where there are chicks that are healthy and able to be accessed for tracking purposes. At this stage it is our hope that we will track two birds from Eyre Peninsula, one bird from Yorke Peninsula and one bird from Kangaroo Island.
The photos here show Ervie with his tracker. It sits neatly and comfortably on his back and does not impact at all on his ability to fly, fish and perch. The tracker is designed to fall off neatly after approximately 4 years by which time a home range and nest should have been identified.
Data is downloaded daily showing where he has flown and we can guage where and to some extent how often he is fishing.
