Re: Goshawk Nest in Riga 2022
Hello , Polly.
As you can see, total independence is difficult to determine, since when it seemed that there was no activity, H97 suddenly appears again.
If what happened last year is maintained by the end of August, the older H's could appear again.
The fate of the first chickens is uncertain, it is possible that they did not do well, which is logical that there is a reduction in the first months or in the winter.
Cheers

Another Sunday visit.

Good evening, Polly, everyone.
There they are without being seen.
12:13:10 and 12:16:26
Ki-ki ki sounds ending in the gjack. It looks like H21.
At dawn nothing was heard from 5 to 6:30.
Goodnight

Today there were these calls so far...
At first I thought of two female voices. H21 and her girl. Not consensual.
I have now decided that it is only a female voice. Definitely upset. If H97 - why upset.
More like H21 - which is beginning to 'close' its territory. Also for their juveniles (then corresponds to the first speculation). What speaks for two voices, the first arriving voice being the bright youthful one.
I'm terribly interested in your opinions.
And where is H44?
Too bad I missed that. There they are without being seen.

Hello, Polly.
The first voice is juvenile in flight and then the other feminine tone that ends up approaching the nest area near the tall innkeeper who cannot be seen , where the camera is (We have seen his shadow almost all season). It doesn't seem like H21 at all to me, but if she's angry she'll have some nuance that she doesn't usually bring out.
The doubt remains but I think it is not H21.
The one from the other day did seem more to me because it was linked to the gjack that we have seen and heard so much. The repertoire of communication sounds escapes us, we know a few but not all.

Definitely interesting.
There are members who don't want to read speculation, but it's extremely fascinating to keep pushing your limits... being confused.
I played the video on my phone, put the bottom right corner in my ear "" (it looks crazy with tablet )...
Hearing crows distantly, they are not relaxed.
Short call Seagull.
Then the distinct call of the youthful female Goshawk. Approaching the area...
the crows again
Then the calls, which are unclear to me. powerful. Too powerful for H97 for me. Or she has made a rapid development.
Flight noises ((departure/landing?)
Then powerful call again
aircraft noise
Call again powerful but thin.
What if both were close together for a few moments?
H21 was already there and H97 was approaching it immediately?
Youthful voice moves away.
Then it's quiet...
Well, it may not matter, but these moments could still shed light on whether H21 is present. And whether the phase has already begun in which the young people are expelled from their parents' territory (which usually does not happen aggressively).

Good morning Polly
It may be two or three counting to H44.
For me there is no such expulsion of the offspring at this time, they simply do not feed them and they scatter. Perhaps very soon if they come into heat there may be some intimidation but we have seen other hawks in the nest in February and there have been no visible violence.
I do not believe that the goshawks are so violent and killers between them as they are put everywhere except in the hunt. It makes no sense to be fighting all day except for very specific periods.
Many of these behaviors are borrowed from falconry or falconer-based naturalists where conditions are different from nature. I do not deny the capacities and behaviors of the goshawks because we have seen in other couples how the males are very careful with the females of their partners. But here we not only have an exception but a good example of affection between the two members of the couple.
Watching C86 last year, H44's father, I have no doubt that he looked "good" as possibly the character of his son.
Also in Riga they are very close together, I think that near these goshawks there are at least three pairs or more in distances that would be unthinkable in the countryside and they have to live together without reaching the limit.
All the best.

I also remember the statement by Imants Jakovslevs in the neighboring forum. C86 was only a guest...passing through, curious. His female was already sitting on eggs at this time. He was peaceful side by side with his son H44 who had found his new territory.
C86, Father from H44
Yes, I remember him. And that I liked him. C86 seemed gentle.... and he slid through the territory with his son H44 at the same time.Watching C86 last year, H44's father, I have no doubt that he looked "good" as possibly the character of his son.

Today I only have this moment...
Not a little interesting, just probably no Goshawk involvement.
Probably ... Jay in a fight? Could also be heard from afar shortly before.

11:15 -21 begging cries thin youthful voice
'21 briefly more excited
No attempt to approach the nest tree
14:31 Calls penetrate the terrain and go away again.
'56 still to be heard.
15:01 last heard
20:53 Juvenile dares another short begging visit

12:06:03 Landing noise in the tree.
Not just any - more like a 'crash' format.
'06:36 Goshawk jumps onto the upper branch ...adult plumage, black ring on the left.
All very quiet - without shouts.
A very relaxed visit - presentation.
Based on the 'impact' in the tree I suspect H21.
14:37 Quiet away
Emiliano, you may be right. The parents move back in now that breeding is over.
I'm pretty sure it was H21 and H97 on August 9th after all. H21 has referred H97.
Everything is going well...if we got a sign from H44 soon.

Hello , Polly
(12:06:03) She is seen going over to the hidden branch on the left and also went off to the left.
At (12:07:09) there is a distant voice from another goshawk.
Yes it looks like H21.
Goodnight.

Today there is something 'on the ears'.
These will be the most common events of the next few months...
In the morning it sounded like a jay to me. Did he do well.

The next calls between 12:36 - 41 sounded interesting.
From 12:36 The quiet briefing ...it sounds when our H's sit close together. No volume...almost barely audible at times. Especially the short sounds - 'Gjak'. However, they are close...
'37:16 suddenly and I think H21 - her voice gets loud.(I would correct....Juvenile calls)
Then, in my opinion, the reputation of a juvenile follows.
I think it's two different voices, even if it sounds like one at first. Voice and position do not seem identical.
Then Jay....
Jay...
Juvenile...
Jay...
Then Juvenile to the end.
Emiliano , what are you saying?

Hello, Polly, good afternoon.
The ones in the morning sound like goshawk sounds with the timbre of a blackbird (surely jays).
In the afternoon, I only have clear some of the youth. The others have something weird.
Jays are capable of mimicking even perfectly but usually change the timbre somewhat.
There has been no previous jay alarm but it is easy for adults and juveniles to learn.
Greetings and thanks

5:43:37
5:44:52 - 5:45:00
6:00:00 - 6:00:17
Sounds of dawn: Short start and then in the following minutes give more, ending in soft gjack.
Let's hope they soon appear on camera and give new signs.
Cheers

Hello Emiliano
I also have the following time stamps for yesterday on my note:
06:28 Fluttering noises
06:28:31 shouts, excited/excited
also:
'29:42
'30:12
Yes, I noted the following:
Both! :)
Short sounds from H44 between the tones of H21 can hardly be heard but there.
I didn't want to write an extra post. Generally not of interest.
thank you if you do.
I don't have anything on paper today.
However, the crows are slowly moving back into the territory from the fields. The nagging is getting louder and louder...
edit:
19:34 - 40 again the calls that sound like H21 but are at least female.
No reaction or sign of another Goshawk.

Good evening everyone, Emiliano
We have similar activity today... female contact calls, demanding.
07:51, '52
no reaction
10:30, '31, '32 ....to '35 every minute
no reaction
10:39, '40 flapping noises and a touch of 'Gjak'
10:43 H21 with 'their' reputation - demand. Each only briefly with 3 sounds
'45, '46, '47
It appears the pair are in the territory together. Even though Goshawks are solitary outside of the breeding season (according to the literature), they still seek out contact with one another from time to time and spend time together in the shared territory.
Sometimes, even when we don't see or hear them, there are clues to their hidden presence.
It's not just the crows that nag. Other residents also warn each other...Blackbirds. Their tireless chirping of warnings could be a clue for us.
But it could also be the presence of the cats...possibly. We know they are there. Soon the time will come when we will be able to hear mating cats again....
