Hello everyone :hi:

▶︎ TRACKER MAP
MADI 03.10.22 — 04.10.22

Distance flown: 15.0 km
Battery level: 27%

Little Madi is still in the same area, on the fields of Great Brăila Island, near Frecăței (Salcia), a commune located in Brăila County, Muntenia, Romania. Frecăței is composed of six villages: Agaua, Cistia, Frecăței, Salcia, Stoienești and Titcov.

Birdingplaces - The Great Brăila Island (Romanian: Insula Mare a Brăilei) is an island on the Danube river in the Brăila County. It has on average 57.9 km length and 18.6 km width. The Canalul Corotisca area is one of the best parts of the Great Brăila Island. It is located on the other side of the Danube at the town of Brăila. It is an area with ponds and forests, and therefore waterbirds and forestbirds. But there is also agricultural land. Pond birds, birds of prey, passerines, and many other birds can be observed. Some of the nice birds you can see are Red-breasted Goose, Glossy Ibis, Corn Crake, Red-crested Pochard, Black Stork, Squacco Heron and European Roller.

Good morning everyone :hi:

MADI

▶︎ TRACKER MAP

It is quite common for juveniles to stay a bit longer at stopover sites and to continue their journey southwards later. I think this is because they are still less efficient fishermen, and so it takes them longer to build up the necessary fat reserves. When Black Storks are in “flight mode”, they sometimes travel on for days without (or with little) food. The built-up fat reserves serve as “fuel”. Juveniles gradually improve their hunting/fishing skills.
It is also known that juveniles often fly less efficiently. They have yet to fully master the perfect use of thermals and often fly by muscle power - wing flapping. This is obviously more tiring and consumes more energy.

:hi: Anne, thank you very much,
great explanation about the juveniles on their first migration :2thumbsup:

A major challenge for the juveniles and how difficult it is for them to search for food, we have unfortunately been able to see in recent years thanks to the Birdmap and the tracker maps. Few actually make it, so many dangers lurk in their path.

just saw now, there is a Birdmap update:

partly overview - Kergu, Nurme and Karl II moved on south

You surely remember that last year in spring Karl II also visited an alcohol distillery/winery. If I remember correctly it was also in Bulgaria. He disappeared without a trace for a few days afterwards...
Sova :hi: then suspected that he was in jail to sober up. :D

Latest tracker map shows Karl II is already in Turkey :loveshower:

So he was flying at the last picture of Birdmap, and didn't make a stop at the winery
He overflew the Sea of Marmara in 100 min. and that even at the widest point ! Incredible.
We will see it tomorrow also on Birdmap.

Good night

I find it a little surprising that s/he stays on the fields and does not visit the marshy banks along the rivers that surround the Great Brăila Island. (An island on the Danube river. The two river branches which separate it from the mainland are Măcin Branch and Vâlciu Branch) That's where one would expect more fish and frogs. :puzzled:

Dunărea Veche – Brațul Măcin (translated)
Dunărea Veche - Brațul Măcin is a protected area (Special Protection Area for Birds - SPA) located in the south-east of the country, in the counties of Brăila, Constanța and Tulcea.
The area was declared a Special Protection Area for Birds by Government Decision no. 1284 of 24 October 2007 (on the declaration of Special Protection Areas for Birds as part of the Natura 2000 European ecological network in Romania).
The Dunărea Veche - Brațul Măcin site has been protected since February 2013 by the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance and covers an area of 18,759 hectares.
The protected area (part of the Steppic bioregion) is a natural area (rivers, lakes, marshes, peat bogs, steppes, natural meadows, cultivated arable land, deciduous forests) that provides feeding, nesting and living conditions for several species of migratory, passage and sedentary birds.

 Anne, thank you for the great pics and detailed info from Madi. I can only imagine that these fields on the Island might be marshy enough to find sufficient food as well ?

Look at our youngsters Bonus, Waba and Little Madi. Each of them has found a nice stopover, each exploring their area in search of food. I hope they find enough and don't miss flying further south soon enough before it gets cold there :D
But in the last few days, for example, unusual high summer temperatures of around 40 degrees were still measured in Turkey.
