Thank you for Waba's week, Jo!

Yes, Little Waba is dithering north and south ... and stays around this Nile area.
I thought this could be Waba's winterplace. But maybe s/he will change the place in some weeks or so. Like Karl II did it (last year).

I found the weather report for Yalıhüyük, closer to Bonus' location, in the Suğla Plain.
It seems to be slightly warmer there

Yalıhüyük is a district of Konya province located in the southern part of the Central Anatolia Region. Yalıhüyük, located between 37''02 north latitude and 39''09 east longitude, is 1100 metres above sea level and is right next to Suğla Lake.
The district is surrounded by Seydisehir in the north, Ahirlı in the south, Akseki district of Antalya province in the west and Bozkir district in the east. The entire settlement area of the district was established on a flat land.
There are agricultural lands and apple orchards on the edge of the settlement area.
The climate has the characteristics of a continental climate and the average annual temperature is 12 degrees.
The biggest state investment brought to our district in recent years is the construction of the "Suğla Reservoir", which is located in the Suğla Plain covering Seydişehir and Yalıhüyük Districts within the borders of the State Hydraulic Works (DSİ) IV. The plain, which turned into a lake by the waters coming from Suberde and Irmak streams and Gökhüyük canal, sometimes remained a lake all year round and sometimes until the end of June. The aim of the project was to transform the plain into regular agricultural land and to store an average of 145 million [?] cubic metres of water per year by means of the embankment constructed and thus to ensure the irrigation of the Çumra plain. This important project was completed by Doğuş İnşaat Tic. ve A.Ş.

Thanks for the weather report, Anne. It's too cold for our little Bonus
I so hope he tries to go a little further south today.

Distance flown: 125 km
Battery level: 100%

Waba stayed in the already well known area in Sudan, along river Nile

S/he flew quite a distance between these two last data updates (125 km).
From the last location point near Qureir Atbara Road to North and stayed around Nuri, but then decided to fly back to the area around Osly

BONUS

Little bonus is still in the same area in Seydişehir district, Konya province in Turkey. It flew a short distance to the southeast, but then changed its mind and returned to the same spots as it did yesterday. Bonus is sleeping on "his private" big power pole again.

The first picture shows the location of the area where Bonus is staying: a plain surrounded by mountains.
Maybe that's why Bonus stays there: doesn't he have enough strength to fly over the mountains?
Or perhaps he is practicing every day so that he can soon move on to the southwest over the mountains.

Hello, thanks to Anne and Francesca :innocent:

This monster of a power pole magically attracts the little bonus? Disturbing night after night. Bonus, get moving, east-south-east. Anne showed you the way, it's really easy.

How is it that in this area the transmitted temperatures differ significantly from those given in the climate tables???

Waba says to himself: with two steps forward, one step back you will also reach your goal. That's right.

I would guess this is because the weather forecast uses the temperature in the shade, whereas Bonus is flying or walking around, and the transmitter will get some direct sunlight.

:hi: Francesca and All!

Re Bonus: I wonder wether the allto straight back-and-forth lines are real. They look too similar to the fake Airport lines. Look at the GPS Jam map: on 24. Nov. the disturbances reached right up to Suğla Lake, including Yalıhüyük and Konya, with Konya even in a red zone. This could be worse by now, or there might be areas not reported for jamming. So, perhaps we cannot rely completely on the transmission data.

Edit: Another thought that occurred to me by studying the tracker map: Could the power pole be one of these "magnetic" points, like Ankara Airport itself, where fake GPS signals are directed to? I just cannot imagine that a little stork flies 2 km upwards a mountainous, dry area in a straight line, only to find one certain power pole to sit on. And back next morning the same route to the same place where he left the afternoon before... Sounds quite improbable, doesn't it? This is where GStreet View crosses the power line, a bit to the NE:

Hello :shake:
thanks for the contributions.

Yes, Hulbi, sure that is a cause. But is it such a big difference?
But we also read Askja's post about the accuracy of the transfers.
This post is very interesting and the idea, that the bonus is not sitting on the power pole is very nice. :headroll:

Good night

Askja,

thank you for your thoughts.

I think the straight lines are due to the fact that measurements are taken every 5 minutes. Thus a distance of 2 km at a speed of 36-42 kmh (which is a normal speed for a BS) can be covered in such a way that we only see a straight line.

As for the power pole, Bonus discovered it over time. At first he spent the night somewhere else. But high places are good for black storks (they have a good overview from there and are protected from enemies), and our observations show that Bonus probably appreciates confirmed habits. Thus I think he chose the place rather than believing in a technical error.

The map with the GPS jam is very interesting though.

Hello Askja,

Thank you for your insights, for the GPS Jam map, and for the photo of the power poles.
Eedi often sleeps on immense power towers like this in Saudi Arabia.

Actually, as a resting place, they are less dangerous than smaller/local power poles because the wires are much further apart. The danger of electrocution is therefore reduced.
Most likely we do not see "ghost"-lines this time. Bonus does indeed use the poles as a roost every now and then in my opinion.
I think so because the lines are consistently just before sunset, and because (in one tracker map) there was also a location point visible during flight towards the pole.

Hi Fussel :hi:

The temperature measured by the transmitter is not the bird's body temperature, neither the ambient temperature.
It is the temperature of the transmitter (measured inside the transmitter), and is therefore determined by: the ambient temperature + (eventual) direct exposure to sun rays (radiant heat) + the body temperature of the bird.

For example, if the ambient temperature is 20°C and the bird has a normal body temperature of 40°C, the temperature measured inside the transmitter will be in between.
If the bird (the transmitter) is exposed to direct sun radiation, the temperature of the transmitter can rise very high.

And when a bird perished, the temperature of the transmitter will drop much more than usual at night. (It takes on the ambient temperature and is no longer heated by the bird's body)

(With leg-mounted transmitters, it is different, less clear).

That was my immediate thought after seeing the picture yesterday. Glad to see it confirmed by you, Anne.

Still, be careful, Bonus!
