Hello everyone! :hi:

WABA

▶︎ TRACKER MAP
WABA 27.11./28.11.2022
From 27.11._11:08 until 28.11._11:08

https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid= ... sp=sharing

Distance flown: 75 km
Battery level: 100%

Waba is still in Sudan, along river Nile
Image

This data session shows Waba´s activities first at well known places between Al Basa, Arak Wad Ibrahim and Osly
Image

But then Waba decided to fly to North, direction Merowe Reservoir, gained more and more hight and the last data point from this session shows her/him in an altitude of 1291 meters and with a speed of 84 km/h
Image

Where will Waba be at the next data session, I am curious! Was this the start for a longer move to North?

Bonus is still in Turkey - BUT he is travelling to South! :shake:

Bonus heard all our sorrows and doubts and has left the area of Beskisehir Gölü

Still a good distance away from the South Coast of Turkey, but definitely 'on the way', made already 165 km

Thank you, Bea

Hooray!!! What a joy! Finally.

Well done, little Bonus! Take care!

Bonus is in the Mut district of Mersin Province, Turkey.
S/he is in the valley of Göksu River.

I looked for a few pictures of his last known surroundings, to get an impression of the area.

Derinçay (formerly Hocantı) is a village in Mut district of Mersin Province, Turkey. It is situated in the valley of Göksu River to the north of Mut. The distance to Mut is 15 kilometres and to Mersin is 180 kilometres. The population of the village was 201 as of 2012. The village is an old village founded by Turkmens. The oldest Ottoman documents about the village are of 15th century. ...

The Göksu (Turkish for "sky water" also called Geuk Su, Goksu Nehri; Latin: Saleph, Ancient Greek: Καλύκαδνος, romanized: Calycadnus) is a river on the Taşeli plateau (Turkey). Both its sources arise in the Taurus Mountains—the northern in the Geyik Mountains and the southern in the Haydar Mountains. Their confluence is south of Mut.
The river is 260 km long and empties into the Mediterranean Sea 16 km southeast of Silifke (in Mersin province). The delta of the Göksu, including Akgöl Lake and Paradeniz Lagoon, is one of the most important breeding areas in the Near East; over 300 bird species have been observed. Among others, flamingos, herons, bee-eaters, kingfishers, gulls, nightingales and warblers breed here. The endangered loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) lays eggs here.

Wow, thanks Bea,

such good news! :headroll:

Now the adventure continues. I hope Bonus has the power and the mind to fly on for some days, warmer regions aren't that far.

Take care, Bonus, and find a good route to wherever you want to spend the winter!

Yes!
Temperatures at his current location south of Kayaönü (and north of Derinçay) are already much better. :headroll: :D

Currently (at 20:00 local/Turkish time) it is 15°C in Derinçay.

:hi: Thanks Bea, what a message! The best of the evening. :headroll:

:loveshower: Little Bonus, have a good trip on your long journey. And always be careful.

Wasn't everything totally normal? There are always longer breaks during migration ....
It was the little Bonus - and nothing was normal.

good evening

:hi: Francesca and Anne7, Hulbi and fussel,
Thank you for your answers and comments. Yes, of course, we can only try interpreting the little da we have, using all means we can find on the net in addition (which is not to belittle the transmitter data, it is such a great achievement to have them at all!). I don't have the experience with the storks' behavior, so I was just pointing out a possibility.

About the power poles: Nowadays, many of the newer ones might be already fitted with bird protector devices. Does anyone know what these look like and whether one can see them on photos or not? :puzzled: Perhaps we don't have to assume that every power pole is always a danger to the birds. I know, it is a potential, though.

Just read the news on Bonus moving on, yay! Thank you Bea and Anne!

Hello Anne, Askja and all, :hi:

I definitely acknowledge what you're saying. Through different perspectives we can learn a lot from each other and complete the picture of behaviour of our BS in migration.

Sova, Anne,

thanks a lot for your wonderful pictures!

Hi everyone! :hi:

Wow, Bonus, great work!

That sure doesn't look like a weak, underfed young stork to me. :D

Where will Bonus' route lead? I'm really wondering if s/he will still fly all the way to central Africa this late, or if s/he will just opt for a cozy spot somewhere like Israel...

Good evening everyone
Thanks, Jo and Bea :hi:

Well done, Bonus!

Bonus is near Elvanlı in the Erdemli district, Mersin Province, Turkey.

Image

Elvanlı is a village in Mersin Province, Turkey.
It is one of the wealthier villages of Mersin Province. Several kinds of citrus fruit are produced in large quantities. The village is also famous for its picnic area called Dedekavak.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvanlı

The weather is nice over there.
This evening at 20:00 it was still 17°C

The weather forecast for tomorrow:
Image

Hopefully Bonus finds a hearty breakfast tomorrow morning (perhaps in the nearby Koca Creek?), and then continues to follow the coastline.
I have a feeling s/he might fly all the way around the Gulf of Iskenderun. Bonus doesn't seem very fond of flying over open water.

:headroll: little one is the biggest.

Good evening everyone and thanks to Jo and Bea for the posts and thanks to sova and Anne for the great pictures.
It is so great what we can fill up on background knowledge in this forum!

If Bonus keeps making sentences like this and Waba keeps flying forward-backward-forward-backward, they will soon meet and tell of their experiences on the nest, "Do you remember the stupid Voog?"

Hopefully the picnickers have enough meat on their grill....

good night

 Hello all !

Of course, Voog will be remembered, because probably Iks and Voog will also be in that meeting with Waba, unless they stay in Israel.

Did we know that Black Storks can live more than 30 years (I read it somewhere)? Also our wise and strong-minded little Bonus, so likely s/he will have a good and long life ahead of him. I believe so!

Social Impacts of a Mega-Dam Project as Perceived by Local, Resettled and Displaced Communities:
A Case Study of Merowe Dam, Sudan

Published: 29 September 2021

Abstract
The paper assesses social impacts of a mega-dam project (Merowe Dam in Sudan) as perceived by host and affected communities (i.e., upstream, downstream, and relocated residents), which is not commonly seen in the literature. Primary survey and interviews were conducted with 300 residents, government officials, the Dam Implementation Unit (DIU), NGOs and other key informants. Five inter-related areas of impact were scrutinized: (a) displacement of communities; (b) resettlement of displaced communities in a new location; (c) technological factors; (d) social mobility factors; and (e) economic and political institutions. Results show that Merowe Dam exerted positive as well as adverse social impacts on local communities. Increase in home sizes, opportunities for children’s schooling and quality of life improvement ranked as the top three positive impacts with residents located downstream scoring relatively higher than relocated and upstream residents. Relocated residents also showed positive attitudes towards the provision of essential services (schools, health facilities, availability of running water, electricity, marketplace, etc.), thereby enabling them to enjoy and flourish in their social lives. The adverse impacts are centered on intangible factors, such as, sentimental effects closely related to their feelings, loss of history, memories, nostalgia about the old place, and grievances regarding compensation packages and its management. Therefore, it is important to recognize the need for long-term monitoring of the resettlement process and provide emotional support to those displaced and resettled. Furthermore, there is also a need to address the livelihood requirements of local communities in the affected region.
