10. May

I miss Miina and Marko 😔 .....I was always aware that one or both of them would not come back, but I would have liked to have himself *seen* that.

Both osprey nests have a long tradition in Estonia. The webcams in Tartumaa and Võrumaa were followed with enthusiasm worldwide, I would say.

It is a great pity that it all seems to be over now. Things change, sure, but: never replace a successful team! 8-)

This year there will be no transfer from osprey nests

We are already used to two osprey cameras a year: one in Võru County and the other in Tartu County, which we have been able to observe since 2013.

There is a gap year this year. In one nest, the camera system has to be replaced and the brood can no longer be disturbed, and in the other nest, which was equipped with a camera, the osprey lost at the beginning of the breeding season, including changing pairs.

...and why can't we see *the new couple*???
Miina's and Marko's nest probably doesn't have a camera anymore....
well.....it doesn't matter anymore Image

:hi: to all!
Three seasons Marko and Miina's family became the victims of goshawks. The previous owners, Madis and Piret, changed the nest even when there were no birds of prey, so M&M(or one of them) could move as well. Probably they considered the season 2020 as "just a bad luck", but when it happened in 2022, they could decide that would be enough. It is not that easy to find a new nest place, but they have no choice. If they nest somethere else without a camera, it would be better than one more online killing season.

I know this ist the area for the Estonian Webcam but I would like to share my joy, the news from Germany:

https://baden-wuerttemberg.nabu.de/news ... 33546.html

In Baden-Württemberg we have got the first osprey offspring for over 100 years! I am so happy about it!

Translation with Google:
NABU and the Südwest-Vogelszene cheer! The osprey offspring from Baden-Württemberg was ringed today. NABU welcomes the hopefuls Balbü and Kju. It has been the first successful breeding in the Ländle for 116 years. A sensation!

June 23, 2023 - A small sensation in the bird world of Baden-Württemberg: Today (June 23) NABU ringed two young ospreys in the Rastatt district. Since 1907, this is the first proven successful breeding of the imposing birds of prey in the southwest. "The excitement was great, we didn't know how many young birds were waiting for us up in the eyrie. The relief that Balbü and Kju are in the best of health is all the greater,” reports Daniel Schmidt-Rothmund. The head of the NABU bird protection center has been campaigning for the return of birds of prey for decades.

Abseiling, weighing, measuring, ringing

Rastatt district, 2 p.m.: Professional climber Georg Bürk, under the guidance of Schmidt-Rothmund, takes the young birds out of their nest at a dizzy height of 25 meters and lowers them carefully in a sack on a rope. The almost five-week-old eagles fall into a natural state of shock. The parents have flown up, are circling over the nest tree and are carefully observing the procedure. They emit excited warning calls. "These characteristic calls have a calming effect on the offspring," explains Schmidt-Rothmund.

The ornithologist carefully receives the young birds on the forest floor. The first thing on the program is the health check: examining, weighing and measuring. "We have a female weighing 1,458 grams and a male weighing 1,178 grams - a very good average for the age group," explains the NABU specialist.

The young eagles are then ringed twice, with a ring weighing about five grams on each leg. This way you can clearly identify them. The small osprey gets its name from the ringing: “Balbü is a short form of the French word for osprey, Balbuzard. Kju refers to the characteristic 'kju-kju-kju' warning call," says Schmidt-Rothmund.

Learn to fly - and then off to winter quarters

After a few minutes, the rope lift takes you back up safely. Climber Bürk safely sets the two young eagles down in their nursery above the treetops with a panoramic view. In the eyrie that Schmidt-Rothmund installed two years ago in the Rastatt district, family normality returns within a few minutes. In about three weeks, around mid-July, Balbü and Kju will do their first flight exercises. In August they leave the Baden Upper Rhine plain and travel around 5,000 kilometers to western Africa, where they overwinter.

Hello Osprey fans :hi:

Yesterday I got exciting news from Urmas and I nearly burst while waiting because I hoped to get additional pictures from him

I did have quite emotional observation yesterday, unfortunately not about BS, but Osprey. Yesterday I met in Karula NP Spanish girl Patricia who participated in Crane Conference. Invited her to take part in fish providing for Karl II. We took fish (ca 50) out of traps about one hour driving from the baskets and she noticed in other end of pond Osprey perching on dead tree. I took spotting scope and soon noticed the ring in Ospreys leg, Osprey stood mostly on one leg and behind of branch, so ring was visible only if stretched the leg. It was too far to read the ring, ca 500m. So we decided to get closer along the forest. It was possible, but still leg not visible. We had to feed mosquitos for more as half of hour and then the Osprey stretched the leg and it was possible clearly to read the ring - black ring with code XC. We left place hidden and Osprey stays there.

I'm in field, so can't check if got some kind of picture of that ring, but maybe in evening or tomorrow can send you more ...

So it turns out that the osprey is 'our' XC, 2021 offspring of Miina and Marco, from Võrumaa webcam nest :loveshower:

It was ringed on 11. July 2021 by Gunnar Sein, as well as its sibling X4

Documentation in the forum about ringing event starts here:

yes, it was exciting observation also for me!

I did not have camera to make photos, but tried to document it via spotting scope and smart phone. Of course first wanted to read code, also Patricia read it and then I started to mount smartphone to the eye piece of scope. One very foggy picture shows ring, but better one if ring not visible, any more.

But those are better as nothing. Overall view, feathering are quite well visible and could be compared to the same during last days in nest as juvenile (2021).

I tried some enlargements of the pics, but I am sure the ring code was better to read by eyesight and spotting scope

Many many thanks to Patricia, who must have Eagle Eyes and spotted XC in the tree and Urmas, you both did not give up, even when you had to loose some blood to the moskitos

What information !!! :loveshower:

Many, many thanks to Mr. Urmas, Patricia and Bea...I'm overwhelmed.
This is our M1....I thought to myself, the two of them disappeared from the nest too quickly, would that work out, would the two survive. I guess I wasn't ready to *let them go* yet.
M1 is now a full two years....I know, I know...three years.
Farewell M1 wherever you fly. Always good wind under your wings and always *laid table*.💕
God, that gives such a great feeling.

:hi: Hellem....our M1....how beautiful!
