He also takes care of the edge of the nest.
But not on the right edge.

Kaia does that.

It's windy.

And apparently a bit too hot for Kaia.

She preens.
Image

She aerates the nest floor.

Egg talk. Many times.
Maybe two chicks.

Image

Kaia shakes her plumage.
Image

17:23 She covers the eggs. I didn't see the pips (hole(s)) in the eggshell(s) this time.

I don’t know, Swenja, but I think two chicks are babbling. :D

The chicks are making themselves heard!
18:24 much and quite loud quacking. 8-)

I hope at least the oldest chick has made some clear progress in hatching by now.

… The final, climax phase of hatching, in which the chick emerges from the shell, varies from a few minutes in small songbirds to a day or more. In the [domestic] chicken, the chick punctures the air cell about thirty hours before hatching, makes its first pip of the eggshell at twelve hours before hatching, and starts to rotate within the shell just fifty minutes before it emerges. In the guillemot, the air cell is punctured thirty-five hours before hatching; the first pip appears at twenty-two hours, and rotation starts about five hours before the chick emerges. …

Kaia stands up and moves the eggs just a little carefully.

Image

Image

Even as she covers the eggs again, the eggs try not to move.

20:08 I think I hear two chicks.
It's a very high-pitched peep and a low-pitched quack.

Kaia loosens the nest floor a little.
She sorts the nesting material and moves the eggs a little.
