Crazy to think that these large birds of prey can suddenly turn into the most gently of mothers when nature calls for it.
Delicately does it, talons out of the way...
We are pretty positive that this chick was from Egg 2. We should know by tonight whether No 1 is a very late hatcher or is a DNH.

Update from the Friends of the Ospreys Pont Croesor nest.
Late Wednesday evening the Pont Croesor female Osprey, Blue 014, took a fish away from the nest to eat and Z2/"Aeron" was observed incubating the eggs. When Z2 bought a Flounder to the nest early on Thursday morning, Blue 014 remained on the nest. At 06:45 we noted a change of behaviour, Blue 014 stood up in the nest, picked up the fish and began to offer small pieces down inside the nest. We observed this behaviour several times during the day and we believe that the first chick has hatched. Congratulations to everyone concerned with this nest.

Look at this picture!!
Two little healthy chicks, Telyn feeding them sea bass for the breakfast - the first of the season.
Q. What will happen to the unhatched egg?
A. Telyn/Idris won’t dispose of it. It will stay in the nest and possibly get buried or shunted to the side as the chicks grow.
If it’s still intact in five weeks when we ring the chicks, we’ll remove it and put it in a glass display box on our Family Tree wall in the Dyfi Wildlife Centre for educational purposes.

Why didn't Telyn's first egg hatch this week, and what has hitchhiking got to do with it?
All is revealed in this week's blog:

Thank you to all of you that have helped with the Camera Appeal this year - we're around 35% of the way there on 1st June.
These are the best pictures we've ever seen of osprey chicks Anywhere. Ever.
Thank you.

We often switch the live streaming cameras to our beaver enclosure for a few minutes as the sun sets in the evenings.
We saw three last night: Barti the Dad (left), Bracken the one-year-old (middle) and Byrti the three-year-old. Feeding them a few carrots each night allows us to monitor their health.
Both Barti and Bracken are black morphs which is fairly uncommon.
Our Cors Dyfi beavers are in an enclosure and have taken over from our water buffalo (now retired in Devon) as part of our Reserve Management Plan. The beavers eat birch, willow and other scrub species, thereby increasing biodiversity and carbon sequestration.
They help maintain our reserve as a wetland peat bog and stop it from drying up

Bore da,
at 12 and 10 days old, our two Bobs are starting to lose their downy fluff and enter the 'dinosaur phase'.
They are yet to feel a drop of Welsh rain, as they continue to thrive in the goldilocks weather.
With plenty of fish, delivered by Idris, and served up by Telyn, life is good for these two. Long may it continue.

A black swan flew over the reserve yesterday - we couldn't believe it!
Idris and Telyn saw it flying by, but realised it wasn't a threat, despite coming very cose to the nest
The black swan is native to Australia, so it has definitely not flown here!
The black swan is a popular bird in zoological gardens and bird collections in western Europe, especially in the UK, and escapees are commonly reported.
As yet, the UK population is not considered to be self-sustaining and so the species is not afforded admission to the official British List, but the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust have recorded a maximum of nine breeding pairs in the UK in 2001, with an estimate of 43 feral birds in 2003–2004.
A small population of black swans exists on the River Thames at Marlow, on the brook running through the small town of Dawlish in Devon, near the River Itchen, Hampshire, and the River Tees near Stockton on Tees.
The Dawlish population is so well associated with the town that the bird has been the town's emblem for forty years.
A truly black-swan event yesterday, just not as rare these days...

For the first 18 days of her chicks’ life, Telyn has been strategically positioning herself so that she acts as a sun-blocker, keeping her offspring cooler in the shade she has engineered for them.
But both chicks are now getting better by the day at their own thermoregulation.
In another couple of weeks, as their adult body feathers are mostly grown, both chicks will be able to fully regulate their own body temperatures.
We’ll see behavioural changes in both adults, spending more time on Monty’s Perch and less on the nest, which will become a bit of a food drop off area.
In another month the nest will have been transformed from a deep egg-cup protective castle to a billiard table flat runway.
All flying things prefer a flat, even take-off pad.

Yesterday’s post was all about the chicks using Telyn as a sun shade.
It’s a similar situation today, only with rain. Telyn has transformed into a Mumbrella.

Both chicks will be ringed in just over a week and named (after Welsh rivers and lakes).

Both chicks have been ringed and weighed this evening.
Chick 1: 1910g, Female, Blue 7B3 (the heaviest chick we've ever had at this nest, beating Paith (2022) at 1830g)
Chick 2: 1515g, Male, Blue 7B4
We'll edit all the footage together tomorrow and hopefully have a ringing video out by the evening, including their names.
