06:46 feeding
The moss pad still obscures the view.
Karl II first gives a few fish and watches the chicks.

#1 eats immediately. #2 chirps and twitters. #1 seems to block his sibling or #2 has yet to learn to eat quickly.

Image

06:48:10 #2 eats and stop tweeting.

Karl II take back the fish.

Another thing about the BS/WS chicks that amazes me is their ability to handle bones in the food. A chick that hatched just over 24 hours can eat fish or other animals with the bones in it. Even if the food for small chicks are predigested, the food isn't broken down beyond recognition. The chicks' digestive system can reduce that food to a liquid on the other end.

Compare that other carnivorous birds. Eagles feed only soft tissues to chicks, which are broken into smaller pieces (see those cameras on the Kotkaklubi YouTube channel). Penguins essentially feed a slurry or paste to their chicks.

Both chicks are eating. This looks very good, even with #2

No, it's not a rat. Even if it looks like it.
Image

I see the swallowing movements of both chicks.
Kaia takes back some food.

Image

#3 is quaking. The egg is not fully open yet.

Image

Kaia loosens the nest floor a litte and covers them all.

Kaia preens a litte bit.

The egg #3 is 31 and egg #4 is 29 days old.

The hole in egg #3 is bigger now. I don't see the crack on the side of the hole.
Image

Egg #4 also has a crack in the eggshell?

12:12 feeding attempt
Karl II gives bigger fish.
There was also a big perch?

I think #1 has eaten. For #2 the food was too big.

The chicks ate something and spat out again.

Karl II easily rolls the eggs. The eggshells look very brittle on both eggs.

14:09 another feeding

The chicks find a few small pieces of food and try to tear something off a big fish.
They have to make a good effort at feeding today to get enough.

Image

Karl II watches patiently and gives a second helping.
