Good morning to all! :chick: :chick: :chick: :chick: :loveshower:

At 4.23 the fourth storklet can be already seen among the others, but it is not clear, whether it hatched completely. I think it was half hatched.

Kaia is cleaning all the chicks.
08:29 She pushes a older chick on his back and preens the chick. It is #1 or #2.

From the sound of it, it's #1.

Kaia covers the chicks.
Now they have 4 under them when the parents cover them. No easy task.

tsang6482 wrote: June 4th, 2023, 12:26 pm Thanks for the insight. The chicks' behaviour suggest to me that they're hungrier than expected so soon after hatching, and the yolk is only one of the things I think about as to why. If the chick isn't hungry, it won't beg, and won't go for the food.
Hello @tsang6482 :hi:
Chick #4 ate his first feed at 4 hours and 5 minutes after hatching. It was able to do so at this point and was also very interested in food, although the yolk will supply a chick on the first day of hatching.

Maybe we can now share this observation with each other? In case there has been a misunderstanding on this issue.

first meal for #4

Hallo @Francesca_V :hi:
 Your comparison is accurate.

If the 4 chicks are growing fast, the parents will not be able to cover them completely for much longer. The 4 chicks are beautiful.

10:13 Kaia lets the sun shine on the chicks.
The chicks have to get used to that too. Judging by the sounds the chicks make, it is getting too warm for them.
Beaks are open.

10:16 Kaia gives them shade now.

10:24 She covers the chicks.

@Swenja, there's no misunderstanding for me. It's all good.

But #4 seemed eager to go for the food quickly after hatching as well. The chicks' behaviour seem to go against much of the research (eg: the guide on hand rearing BS chicks suggest not to feed in the first 24 hours). Not sure if I'm onto something, or anything, for that matter.

Hello @tsang6482
The difference is the natural feeding by the parents. The pre-digested food of the parents is adapted to the chicks.
When fed by humans, this food does not contain the saliva with the enzymes and microorganisms.
@Anne7 once posted something about this. I am sure she has this article or something with it on file in the little library.
