He's winging
Image

20:02 Anna stands up ..strange behavior...I didn't see it before. they both pulled the mouse. I don't think he understood why she isn't eating? :puzzled:

EDIT: I watched yesterday's scene again today. Andris wanted Anna to eat. She hasn't eaten enough for 2 days. It could be that he is particularly caring. It almost seems right to me, seeing how much he cares about nest and clutch.

As Liz01, very strange behaviour.

It culminated with Andris eating one of the partially disassembled rodents, with Anna all along trilling loudly. Eventually, Anna stood up and the two briefly had the tug-of-war mentioned by Liz01, ending in Anna swallowing the prey.

20:02 Andris left and Anna resumed brooding. Anna left for R'nR at 21:18, returning at 21:26 with a considerable portion of a tree (well, it was large, and a pine I think).

21:28 faffing around on the nest, Anna finds a small mouse tucked into the branches and stores it.

22:13 Anna stands and starts feeding the chick with the mouse.
Image

It seems that if the chick fails to grab the morsel within a few tries, it becomes Anna's treat and she swallows it.

Feeding over by 22:23, whereupon Anna settles over her chick and the second egg. 22:44 it is lights out for Anna.

What will Andris do tomorrow? He is highly unusual to say the least.

8:26 she is back with a rather dry poplar twig. our deciduous trees are also dying of thirst. i saw it today. The birch leaves are totally dry. Trees that stand alone are particularly badly affected by drought

Thin day at the office for Andris - he delivered just a bird, as Liz01 noted. Not yet a calamity but the nest tonight has an empty larder.

There was enough food for a feeding at 16:00 or so, but Anna ate too, and she swallowed the hindquarters of a mouse she fished out of the branches of the pantry area.

Anna stood up at around 19:50, preening etc. Chick took a PS
Image

At 19:54 Anna out for R'nR and returned with a pine sprig.

Resumed brooding. Anna stayed pretty much awake for long tonight, drowsing a bit. A quick stand, preen and fuss wity the nest bottom, before settling and as night closed in at 23:00 she tucked her head into her back feathers.

As Liz01 noted, there has been low rainfall in much of northern Europe and one consequence of that, is that frogs are not widespread in the forests. In previous years, when hunting was difficult, Andris would often be able to search out a frog or three, to tide things over. These "filler" snacks may be harder to come by this year.

these first couple days after the hatch are nice, anna always spends a lot of time just looking at the chick.

since it looks like the other egg is opening today, hope whatever happens between the two chicks happens fast.
