80.Eagles at the Winter feeding place
Video (close-up) by Aivar Veide, January 21st, 2011
"Today was at the feeding place Aivar Veide. He saw 8 ringed eagles. Most of them were there before and their ring-numbers were known. At the same time he saw 12 eagles but during day-time visited this feeding place maybe 20 eagles. Very interesting were two eagles from Finland (2009), their numbers were consecutively...seems that they were from the same nest and they were similar too. Aivar sent me video and here it is: (...)"

83. WWF Finland works for the protection of the White-tailed Sea Eagle and the Baltic Sea
ITÄMEREN PUOLESTA - WWF Suomi - Merikotkatyö, 2010

Translation:
ITÄMEREN PUOLESTA - WWF Suomi - Merikotkatyö, 2010

Translation:
- Anne Brax (A.B., the PR-woman for WWF Finland):
- When the protection work started in the beginning of '70ies the situation of the WTEs was really miserable. The number of nesting couples was just over 30, and this proud animal was disappearing from the Finnish nature.
Newspaper headline:
- “High levels of environmental toxins found in WTEs”
A.B.:
- WWF called for volunteers and formed a working group to contemplate what could be done.
Hannu Ekblom (H.E., a member of the WWF working group for WTEs in Finland, the man without the beard):
- I joined the winterfeeding work of the WTEs in the early '80ies.
A.B.:
- It was a surprise to see during the years what a success the winter feeding of the WTEs proved to be.
Newspaper headlines:
- “Koivusaari in Iisalmi says: the numbers of WTEs are growing” (in Savon Sanomat March 25th 1982)
- “20 tons of meat fed to the WTEs in the Turku area this winter”
-“Juhani Koivusaari says: Government aid needed for the WTEs” (in Iisalmen sanomat March 28th 1982) [Juhani Koivusaari is one the foremost WTE researches in Finland]
A.B.:
- When the environmental toxins weren't any more accumulating in the bodies of the WTEs their egg-laying became successful and improved their breeding success and the number of the WTEs began to increase.
H.E.:
- The large-scale winter feeding was stopped after year 2000, as the eagles had become able to get along by themselves.
H.E. (while going to the nest):
- I'm glad that this couple has been successful in their breeding.
- The follow-up of the number of WTEs is still extremely important and enlightenment among the public and protection work are still needed.
- The WTE is a part of the Finnish national heritage. It is great that its future seems to be secured as new eaglets are born.
At the nest the discussion of the two men:
- "180"
- "23180. Red and black."
The bearded man: "The wind is growing harder. It will begin to rain soon."
H.E. (from the tree top): "So it seems."
The bearded man: "Hurry up."
H.E. (from the tree top): "Ok. But i can't rush. This takes its time."
H.E:
- As the Baltic Sea is a habitat of the WTE its condition is of utmost importance. It is still much polluted and the WWF is working for its protection. The Baltic Sea should not be a dump where for example fertilizers are flown and oil spilt.
- We need to respect and value this fine sea even though it is rather shallow compared to oceans.
H.E. (while going to the nest): “This work has yielded results.”
H.E. (at the nest to the eaglet):
- Hi! Well hello... Look what I've brought to you.
Eaglet:
- Kha-kha-kha-kha-khaa...
H.E.
- Protection is long-span work. It doesn't go like that this year you do this and the next year that. Along the years things develop gradually. More eaglets are born and the number of WTEs increases.
A.B.
- Without the volunteers' work the WWF would not have made this. This kind of work cannot be done by officials or civil servants working from 9 to 5. It would simply be too expensive.
- The donations of private citizens are vital as there always will be expenses. The members of the WTE working group are not receiving salaries but their expenses are
compensated for.
- The support, even small donations from people make this work possible.
- The members of the WTE working group have done invaluable and unselfish work protecting the WTE.
Eaglets:
- Kha-kha- khah!
