Pērle follows him and picks up the food.

The chicks only have a moderate appetite. The smallest and one sibling happily accept the offer of food.

Here and there they are already starting to pull on the piece of food.

Pērle took a bath again. :headroll:

Returns to the nest, eats the leg of the last food carcass and stops at her chicks.

Pērle is increasingly using the side branches for short stays.

17:03 Pērle jumps onto a nearby branch. The chicks are watching Mama, and her shadow can also be seen.

The chicks lay full and sleepy.
18:36 Pērle begins to gnaw on a leftover piece of food and offers another bite. The chicks seem full and Pērle carries the first leg of the food animal out of the nest...

4:45 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Putting on the rings was pretty calm and no-frills. Imants Jakovlevs is noticeably a professional. All the young animals were given a cuddle and soon became Hawklets with their own ID. :innocent:

Pērle & Rio now have 2 male and 2 female Hawklets.
A pleasing result so far! May all bundles of joy have a long life.

Labdien,

GT:
Good afternoon,

The hen hawk chicks got the following rings today:
On the left leg black plastic ring: X01, on the right leg aluminum ring: DT4841; the boy
On the left leg black plastic ring: X02, on the right leg aluminum ring: DT4842; girl
On the left leg black plastic ring: X03, on the right leg aluminum ring: DT4843; the boy
On the left leg black plastic ring: X04, on the right leg aluminum ring: DT4844; girl

I didn't measure today, but girls at this age weigh 1000 grams and boys around 700 grams.

It takes over an hour for Pērle to jump back into the nest.
18:07 Probably out of the tree, Pērle returns to the nest with her Hawklets.

Still visibly shaken.

Hi! :hi:
On May 10th I dared to suspect that Mini was a boy. He just stayed smaller. Although he also developed. Female Hawklets outgrow their male siblings, even if they are hatched later and younger.

Pay attention to the strength of the legs. This is the best indicator in my opinion. Females have stronger/thicker limbs.
Also a strong, broad chest. But this only becomes apparent much later. It doesn't matter here yet. Only the general size is clearly visible.

As an aside, a possibly subjective observation from me:
Male Hawklets are more fidgety. They jump and flutter constantly while their sisters appear more 'sluggish'.
Previously, it was often the male Hawklets who left the nest first. While the girls develop into homebodies.
And - the females were often more greedy.

A lovely moment today to see all four bundles of joy. :innocent:

The rings are still new and easy to read. So in favorable situations you can see who is fluttering.
I have included the IDs above and on page 1, kindly provided by Imants Jakovlevs.

Thank you for your reply Polly ...

So with Imants Jakovlevs experience he was able to determine male and female chicks by close inspection while ringing.

Have a lovely weekend.
