:hi: IceAge! That was great, I just watched it. A rather intimate view of a marten. I guess a lot of fleas, ticks and whatever finds, uhm: shelter in a marten's coat was keeping him busy. We surely don't necessarily like them on nests with feathered inhabitants and their offspring, but in this case ... go for it and use it as a resting place this season.

Have Tiiu and Taavi chosen a different nest?

I think yes, they have a different nest now. As Taavi has the transmitter then Urmas probably knows it better :puzzled:

Yes, but unfortunately Urmas doesn't get in touch here.

The camera is off and there is no news about Tiiu and Taavi.
I find that very sad.

Hello IceAge :hi:

I have an eye on the data of Taavi´s transmitter all the time, also now during summer. After it turned out that they will not use the camera-nest, I asked Urmas for his opinion about the few incoming data, as I am not experienced enough to interpret them correctly.

That´s what Urmas answered to my question from April, 21th

It seems to me that Taavi-Tiiu will choose former nest site. We built there artificial nest platform after dry nest tree broke, but then eagles did not accept our work, maybe now. Will be clear by summer, July. Taavis transmitter sends not much data, so according those it is difficult to decide about new nest site, yet. But Taavi keeps around former nest forest more as camera place.

It´s mid of July now, maybe we have to wait a little longer until we can get more infos, referring to Urmas answer. It is field-work-time and everyone is out to ring juveniles and control nests and much more like this ....

I am curious, too! :D - and hope this little info can help you while waiting longer ....

Thank you, Bea.
I'm also interested in the things that can't be seen. They say more than just pretty pictures.

Hello everyone :hi:

Just want to let you know that Taavi is still in Estonia, has not started migration yet.

I have an eye on his doings

Hello everyone :hi:

We have a news-update about Taavi!

When I checked his last data in the OrniTrack Control Panel I was pretty startled, because the route I saw was no longer showing a flying bird, most part of the route showed movement on streets

Contact to Urmas brought a quick reply and calmed immediately:

Just returned from the field, we tried to trap GSE mate of Taavi for tracking. Six common buzzards were trapped and Taavi. As transmitter of Taavi was old one if last year we installed it and with worn solar panel currently, I decided to replace transmitter. So old one arrived to my home and Taavi is fully OK. He feeds juvenile on territory, yet ... Actually we were together younger colleague Pelle, half goes on his account. He was also who trapped Taavi.

All buzzards were 'by catch', got rings, were measured and released again. Taavi´s mate is a smart girl, didn´t let trap her
AND now we know that they were breeding successfully this season and Taavi still feeds his offspring

Field work is still going on:

Spotted Eagles will be in migration map. There is needed simply time for me to work with it. Currently priority is to trap eagles up to migration starts. Greater ones stay for longer a bit.
Will go now and return in Sunday...

So maybe field work will be successful and we will see new LSE and/GSE on the birdmap? Let´s wait and see and I hope we will get the possibility to make tracker maps for Taavi also with his new transmitter.

Picture of Taavi´s release after he was trapped (do you see the look he is sending to the photographer? )

Hope you are all as happy as I am about all these good news and have a nice weekend everyone Image

Hello everyone :hi:

On the birdmap we can see a 'new' LSE, Iivar, who migrates south on a bit unusual way. On birdmap is written, that his mate is a GSE, Iiva, and also this:

A Lesser Spotted Eagle male (Iigar) nesting with a Greater Spotted Eagle female (Iiga). They both are tracked within the project GSELIFEAboveBorders.

I can´t find a tracked GSE Iiva on the birdmap among the GSEs, what a pity, maybe her data are not for public.

And as I had not known anything about the project GSELIFEAboveBorders I made a research and came across this, maybe this is also interesting for others interested in GSEs:

Above the borders: conservation of Greater Spotted Eagles at breeding and wintering areas, and on its flyway: LIFE22-NAT-PL-GSELIFEAboveBorders

Description

Programme(s): Programme for the Environment and Climate Action (LIFE)

Topic(s): LIFE-2022-SAP-NAT-NATURE

Type of action: LIFE Project Grants

Project ID: 101113849

Objective:

The aim of the GSELIFEAboveBorders project is to sustainably improve breeding sites’ conditions and increase the Greater Spotted Eagle Clanga clanga (GSE) abundance in the EU, and to reduce threats and secure key GSE staging and wintering sites along its flyway. The project will contribute to the survival of the greater Spotted Eagle through activities aimed at increasing the number of young eagles (rescue of Abel line chicks and at reduction of the impact of predation on chicks’ survival), protection of GSEbreeding forests and bird hunting areas, individual protection of birds tracked using GSM, combating illegal shooting and poisoning, setting up secure feeding stations on wintering grounds to improve bird condition and extensive educational activities. The GSE is classified as critically endangered in 27 EU countries and is on the list of EU bird species identified as "priority for LIFE funding". The disappearance of the last large-scale marshes on the edges of the EU, essential for breeding, and population losses on migration and wintering grounds are the main reasons for its bad conservation status. The 30 years of experience in GSE conservation of the project’s coordinating beneficiary (Poznań University of LIFE sciences) and its experience in other LIFE projects will allow to put in place on a permanent basis a set of measures whose effectiveness is widely recognised. The implementation of GSE protection is only possible on the basis of international cooperation, designed in the project and consolidated by the creation of an international network for GSE protection. This is the first such broad, integrated implementation of these methods in GSE conservation on a European scale. Benefits include protection of nesting and foraging conditions for GSEs (protection of all EU breeding forests, 40 nesting platforms, 14 feeding grounds, 65 observation points - an increase by min. 4 pairs), rearing of chicks (min. 8 GSE), protection against marten (an increase of breeding success up to 60%), protection of migration routes (3 stopover sites, 20 insulated power poles), protection of GSE Above the borders, so as to ensure the conservation of Greater Spotted Eagles at breeding and wintering areas, and on its flyway.
