The empty nest in Makov. Some of the storklets already fledged, others just walked away.

Sova :hi:
Yes, Lizinka was a roedeer. She was adult yet in 2011, so she must be at least 13 years old, it is pretty much. Last few weeks she looked very skinny and sick, so she was separated from the others but didn't recover.

A grey crane is a newbie in Makov, he/she didn't get a name yet. It looks like the crane gets on well with Snehurek, they walk together.

The crane was named Jonáš.

Today a young female mouflon Mufi had leg surgery. She will stay in clinic for 10 days and then will be returned in Makov.

The fifth storklet was saved from its "kind" parents who were going to eliminate it(the female put it on the edge of the nest, the camera owner saw that and took the chick away before it happened). On the video you can see the first day of the saved storklet. The pieces of food are too large for it, later the storklet got earthworms.

This year in Makov there are two white stork couples breeding: Honzik and Johanka and a wild one, who built a nest on the wooden tower near Makov pond. And of course those wild storks visit Makov "dining room" too. They laid 5 eggs.

Today there are two news from Makov white stork nest: good and bad. A bad news is that all the eggs of Honzik and Johanka are empty and a good one is that they adopted four little storklets. Hope there will be more info about them.

Kaluga region. It is the same nest where last year the fifth storklet was saved and grew up separately. But this year is not too lucky for the stork couple: two of the three storklets died on June 2 and June 5 probably because of cold weather. The eldest one is OK.

June 8th.

The constant rain proved fatal for many chicks. Biologist Roland Hilgartner explains why young storks are particularly sensitive and how the orphaned adults are reacting.

Only about 20 percent of the young storks are still alive: the brood of spring 2024 largely froze to death. Park director Roland Hilgartner assumes that around 80 percent of the animals that hatched in the nests on the farm of the monkey mountain died of freezing. He estimates that the situation in the surrounding nests is just as bad. "If not even worse," he says. The last time there was a similar failure was in the cold, wet spring of 2016.

180 breeding pairs in the Affenberg team
The Affenberg stork team looks after 50 pairs of storks on the farm and another 130 pairs in the surrounding communities. On average, they lay four to six eggs, two of which hatch and survive the first few weeks. Ideally, they learn to fly soon before they start their migration south on their own, unaccompanied by the adult birds, in August.

Spring and early summer bring a lot of rain and sometimes low temperatures to the region - a deadly combination for young storks. Experts say it will be an extremely bad year for the animals.

Lonely parents: This stork couple in Möggingen recently lost their four chicks - and they are not the only ones. In the meantime, these parent birds have built a new, temporary nest next to their old one (seen in the picture).| Image: Gerald Jarausch

Anti-Wamel in Brest. Probably you remember the tragic story in Wamel when the female got her leg damaged and the male was not able to feed the kids, they died one by one, because people did nothing to help themapart from blocking youtube chatters.

5 years later, Brest. Male white stork Figaro died because of the accident, his female left alone with relatively big kids but luckily people do help her and the storklets get food from them.
