Re: Goshawk Nests in Riga 2024
October 31st
Hello together!
In addition to the colorful hustle and bustle of the great tits and the knocking of the woodpecker in nest tree 1, we can now say that our goshawks are camera shy but - they stay in their territory.
Something is driving the female to change her incognito status. She calls energetically.
On the one hand, I don't know what or who the reason is and on the other hand, I only have to vaguely document the second voice. But I think I heard another timid male voice.
Well, just the simple, gentle 'Gjak'

Lots of thoughts to Emiliano in Spain...the storm is tough on the areas and I hope you are well.

Thank you very much, Polly, for your concern about me.
I am fine, Spain is very big and only affected a part of it with catastrophic results.
Congratulations for your efforts in following the goshawks.
Greetings to all.

Emiliano, thank you for your sign! It's very good to read you.
November 1st
A very unfriendly day.... damp, with gusts. No day that creates a mood. At least not heated ones.
But that's the way it goes and that's how it should be. Nevertheless, the couples maintain their bond with each other.
To hear our chatterboxes 12:31. Another day that shows that 'invisible' does not mean absent.

Personally, I am eternally grateful when streams continue even in the quiet off-season. It is an exciting and joyful time to see how nest life continues to develop. Couples behave outside of the brood and there are always twists and surprise guests.
Thank you LDF!!!

Hmm, 17:18:55 landing sounds?
'20 the rustling again....
The weather is quite calm at the moment - there is a bird in the tree.
By the way, Nest 1.

Good evening everyone!
Small update:
As the Goshawk's activity decreases, the viewer itself also becomes sluggish.
And when you think that there is nothing there anyway, a sign comes from somewhere.
Like November 4th, 7:10 in the morning
Super short calls that I assign to a goshawk but I can't say whether it's one of ours.
Short call, bright...and further away.
To hear:

November 6th
A sparrowhawk flies silently and smoothly into the nest.
He seems almost lost and doesn't seem to feel well either... a crow has accompanied him and settles down behind the fork in the tree trunk.
The sparrowhawk decides that his curious excursion is enough and flies away quietly.
... again accompanied by the crow ...

Good evening!
Well, the sparrowhawk may currently have a good fishing area here or is it looking for a new territory?
However, his behavior does not indicate this.
I'm not sure if it's the same sparrowhawk from November 6th.
The white markings on the back of the head appear to be closer together today.
I leave it out and enjoy the variety in the nest... this sparrowhawk today, which is actually showing some aggressiveness.
Chasing a crow. One of a few trying to surround the sparrowhawk in the tree.
And insanely fast... lightning fast. The Goshawks seem almost sluggish in comparison.

He also discovers Nest 2.
And the “little Goshawk” is also escorted here from the crows.
We have a nice view of the pretty sparrowhawk here. Could it be a female? Looks pretty strong. But that's just my guess.
The escort is barely visible but her gurgling can be heard.

Hello everyone!
Time for a little update.
+++
Nest life has become somewhat sluggish as the weather is very harsh during the season. There are days when you can't even see the little colorful neighbors.
The crows are an integral part of the community and are not so camera shy.
November 11th
Like to come in flocks...
There was a lot of excitement here. Something must have happened. I recorded it but there was too much flight movement and I couldn't see anything.

November 18th
Another sparrowhawk visiting one of the nests - today nest 2.
A young sparrowhawk stumbling into the nest with prey.
Looks like a little sparrow couldn't escape the sparrowhawk. The falcon plucks the little bird for quite a long time.
Crows have discovered the bird of prey and are circling the tree with loud 'hate calls'. The sparrowhawk becomes increasingly restless and leaves the nest very quickly when he spots something down below.

November 22nd
Good evening!
And another sparrowhawk appears in front of the camera.
Adult dress again. And again with prey... also a sparrow that didn't escape the sparrowhawk's clutches.
He is still alive, his beak is hanging in the sparrowhawk's chest feathers and breathing movements are showing. Stress...it's not easy emotionally to watch.
[img https://sjjs.de/hansbilder/images/8581S ... Player.jpg /img]
The sparrowhawk begins to pluck when the little bird no longer seems to show any signs of life.
The sparrowhawk also appears stressed and rushed. I don't know if it's hunting frenzy or he's actually feeling unwell.
He leaves the nest quickly, carrying his prey with him.
Please only watch it if you feel you can handle the situation.

Today the crime scene cleaners were in the nest.
The crow pecked at something twice but left it behind.

December 6th
Good evening all together!
There is a still life here.
I watch over both nests but there is hardly any movement.
No shouting, no stays in the tree (at some point we would notice) ... we know that differently from "our H's". H44 & H21 were also rare (which is absolutely in keeping with the nature of the winter hawk) but we were still able to capture calls. Which showed that the couple certainly cared for their territory.
Nothing here.
Rarely crows complain. Which is obviously more of a saber rattling among each other.
Well, I'm very... extremely excited about the start of the 2025 season. Who will show up...will a resident Goshawk show up?
Unfortunately, I think Rio will no longer appear. I'm so sorry. Rio was enchanting, crazy... Somehow many of the Goshawk males are. Sacrificial, a little lost and absolutely dependent on the signal from their partners. Absolutely social and unconditional partners.
I won't forget any of them.

Nevertheless, and especially the loss of our Jo Uk, the unsettled state of world peace, the many countless victims of violence and dictators...losses of beloved birds, unknown millions of animals wantonly killed...does not stop being there. Maintain the will to carry on, for each other, with each other - let's continue to inform each other, smile at each other... for our animals, our nature.
If not us, then who...
A loving and hopeful Advent season!
