NEWS 10th November
The nestlings (Yira, the larger female and Garrama, male*) are now 36 and 37 days old and doing lots of "wingersizing" and mostly self-feeding already.

Average time from hatch to fledge at this site is 42 days. Males often go earlier than females. So fledge watch starts about 12th November.

In fact Garrama almost took off this morning https://youtu.be/MP2PCwcr8JI
If they did fledge early ('fludge") they would be fine, I think, as they would be capable of short flight or glide to the ground safely.

NEWS 13th November
1126 am Garrama (the smaller one ie the male) fledged today. Both parents went after him, so they know where he is and will feed him and look after him. He was 39 days old, so quite old enough.

Video: https://youtu.be/JT30LcMTYJw

The larger female, Yira, who is 40 days old might also fledge today, but is more likely to wait a few more days.
Here is an example of the the youngsters "wingersizing" earlier this morning.

NEWS 14th November
Garrama (the smaller one ie the male) fledged yesterday at 1126 h (at 39 days old, earlyish but within normal range). We found him this morning and caught him to examine his tail as some of his tail feathers had not emerged. I've removed the sheaths (with tiny scissors) but am still not happy with his condition, so I will be taking him to Taronga Western Plains zoo (Dubbo) tomorrow morning for assessment

Cilla Kinross
Just a quick update - I'll be taking Garrama to Dubbo tomorrow for expert avian vet assessment.
I have given him some meat, but if he's stressed, I doubt if he'll eat it. They are in fine condition so a couple of days without food or water is not an issue.

NAFU
Regarding Yira's tail feathers, on the right-hand-side, she has one feather that's slightly curved outwards, fairly easy to see when's at the window on LedgeCam

Cilla Kinross
@I've noticed that about Yira's tail, but one tail feather is not a problem. Garrama had five or so feathers under-developed. I knew that he could have an issue, but not much you can do about it
I sent a photo of Garrama's tail (after sheath removal) to the raptor rehabilitator and it was her suggestion to take him to Dubbo..
I can't predict the future, but I doubt if it is a serious issue.

Info in the video description:
NEWS 15th November by Cilla:
Unfortunately, Garrama (the male fledgeling) was euthanased at Taronga Western Plains Zoo today after X rays showed he had a severely deformed spine (birth defect) and would never be able to fly as a peregrine should and so did not fulfill his destiny as the 'hunter'. So my concerns about his poorly developed tail feathers were only the start of his problems. He will be buried at the zoo.

Heartbreaking for sure, this little guy reminds me at Rubus and Izzi, fly high poor little falcon. Your life was much too short, it ends before it begun...

Birdfriend, good to see you well, miss you
Thank you very much for your kind words, seira.
I'm really enjoyed, that you are still so busy in this topic too. I have to less time for documentation and also no more pleasure. I follow our birdcams constantly, they are a part of my life.

I was so sad about the loss of Garrama, that I must do a statement. The males (early fledgers) from the last 3 seasons had no luck to survive.
All three were full of energy, fast in learning, curious...I still can't believe it.

Hope Yira is doing well and will come home in the next days.

I wish you all the best, seira!

And a big thank you to never tired Liz too.

NEWS 19th November
1230 pm Yira sighted in Girinyalanha high in the eucalypts below the tower. I watched her fly to the top of a eucalypt. She was being mobbed by magpie larks and took off again quickly, so I couldn't get a photo. We've had a few 'possible' sightings from cams, but this was the clearest view in the field.

19/11 Yira sighted (definitely) by myself in the field in Girinyalanha high in the eucalypts below the tower.

Unfortunately, Garrama (the male fledgeling) was euthanased at Taronga Western Plains Zoo after X rays showed he had been born with a severely deformed spine.

NEWS 27th November
Yira has been seen several times via cams, including a likely prey transfer on 25th November (spotted by Moka) and a few chases, plus two rather clumsy landings on the tower slope.

She's only been seen once on the ground (by myself on 19/11 in Girinyalanha), but we know she is around and doing well.

December 6

NEWS 6th December
Unfortunately, it would seem that Yira must have had a flying accident or mishap as she hasn't been for over a week and that's very unusual as fledgelings are very active and noisy at this age. I would expect to see her daily, chasing her parents for food and that hasn't been observed recently.

I'll still keep an eye out for her in case she's using different roost trees, but I don't hold up much hope at this stage. There are some videos of her (we think) flying on the youtube channel.
