2024.11.17 - Who said Osprey don't fish at night. Weather was not good in Port Lincoln yesterday so at 3.38am when Mum saw a fish swim by the barge - in the blue light - she didn't miss the opportunity to swoop down, catch the fish and give Wilko & Kasse an early morning snack. Well done Mum.

I'm really glad that Port Lincoln started a fish fairy (suppliment) for this nest.
I will never forget the season 2022, it was really horrible and heartbreaking.

I just read, that Ervie is fine so far. These three guys were so funny to observe.

Port Lincoln Osprey
Wilko is 48 days old today and Kasse is 45 days old. Weather permitting they will be banded and tracked next Saturday at which time they will be 55 and 52 days old.
We don’t know what colour bands will be used that’s up to Ian the licenced bander. Osprey generally fledge at around 61 days so the timing should be just right.

Last season we implemented a supplementary feeding program to ensure that the chicks in the Port Lincoln Osprey nest could thrive. This year both Adults have provided well for their growing family of two most of the time, but on occasion we have supplemented feed when behaviour on the nest indicated there was insufficient fish being brought in. Today was one of those days. The chicks and the adults were hungry and for whatever reason the adults were not fishing. With bad weather forecast for the next two days the "fish fairy" paid a visit. This involves buying fresh whole fish that Capitals Seafood provide often at a reduced price, taking it out to the barge and dropping it on the nest. Why on the nest?....to make sure it's not stolen by gulls or left on the floor of the barge where it may be contaminated. The Adults circle the nest or perch on the top antenna while all of this is going on. Usually the chicks pancake... the Fish Fairy leaves and Mum returns immediately to feed. Wilko however, likes to see exactly what's going on and to make sure he/she is first fed. Dad perched until the chicks and Mum had their fill and then picked up one of the fish for himself.

2024.11.29 - Mum has certainly got the hang of this blue light night fishing. 3 fish caught tonight - starting at 3.35am. She misses the first time but does a lap around the barge and then back in for another fish, another lap around the barge and then Wilko & Kasse get another early morning feed. Tomorrow is the big day - they both get their bands and trackers attached.

What a great learning experience we have all had, entertaining Roy Dennis. So much knowledge he was willing to share with us all. It was also lovely to have a man of his experience applaud all that Friends of Osprey Sth Aus are doing to save the endangered Osprey in South Australia.

2024.12.06 - How cool is this - Dad is now catching fish from the barge. He takes it to the rails for a quick feed before giving it to Wilko & Kasse on the nest. If it wasn’t for our faithful group of devoted watchers on Youtube, who post time stamps of all the activity, I would not have seen this.

Wilko Fledged at 13:25:10 today he is the 16th Osprey to fledge from 30 eggs laid on the Port Lincoln Barge since 2015. Fly high and strong Wilko...number 17 coming up as Kasse is taking notes.

Both chicks have now fledged from the Barge. Wilko first up with a strong fledge has been gradually extending his flights to surrounding g boats. Kasse on the other hand fludged off the nest before “finding her wings” and making it to a small yacht to recover. We are looking forward to watching them gain strength and confidence in coming days.

Learning to fly is fraught with dangers and obstacles!! It's nerve wracking for young Osprey and their cheer squad of viewers. Yesterday Kasse miscalculated and ended up in the water. She managed to get herself up on to the mooring ropes where she sat and regrouped for about 2 1/2 hours! Eventually the sight and sound of Wilko being fed on the nest motivated her to move but the wind direction was not in her favour and her next landing was on top of a mast nearby....at least now home was upwind for lift. It took a further three attempts before she finally made it to the nest in time for left overs. Over night she has been off again this time she has been balancing precariously on the mooring lines of the Old Barge until making it back on to the deck. At one stage Mum, Dad and Wilko were all there to give her encouragement but so far she is not trying this flying thing again!! Wilko on the other hand seems to have found Australian Fishing Enterprises perhaps he thinks that's where the Fish Fairies hang out but we all know that's actually Capitals Seafood.

Eventually a fish tempts Kasse to try but by the time she makes it back to the nest Wilko has cleaned up.
