The oldest Osprey chicks are already 2 weeks old, and all three are rapidly losing their downy feathers, now showing pin feathers that will develop into their full juvenile plumage.
CJ7 and 022 are continuing to do a great job at providing food for the chicks and keeping them as cool as possible in the hot weather...

Plant egniol!
All parents know you need eyes in the back of your head sometimes and our chicks are no different.
These pictures are all from this morning and you can see how much exploring the chicks are now doing around the nest, every time you look they are somewhere different.

Late on Tuesday. We were lucky to see the first osprey chick joined by a second! It is likely that there will only be two for the season with either the first or the third egg failing to hatch.

What's been happening on that nest this week? Fishing, fighting and frying. Here is the best of the week from the Garten nest...

Bore da, good morning.
Our osprey family provided a good example of their behaviour and reactions to a possible intruder this morining:- LM6 is unsettled, LJ2 arrives with fish but both parents looking around. LM6 alarm calls, both chicks laying flat; which is their natural response to the parents alarm calling. LJ2 also begins alarm calling. Both LM6 and LJ2 looking upwards alarm calling. We assume an intruder is flying too close to the nest for the parents comfort.
Once the danger has passed both parents relax, chicks get up and its time for brunch.🙂

Noswaith dda, good evening.
Our chicks are getting more and more mobile, wandering around the nest. The adults are bringing in sticks to put around the edge of the nest to stop the chicks from wandering too close to the edge, I dont think LM6 quite liked that stick!!
Nice to hear the chicks getting more vocal and also getting more colourful, their feathers are rapidly developing.
LJ2 on the carmera perch giving his beak a clean on the perch, quite a long video but he is a beautiful bird.

Last night Asha was forced to defend the nest from unknown intruder. This morning it appears that this intruder was maybe more familiar with the nest than we thought. Axel has returned and he's not happy! What this now means for the nest we can only wait and see, but Brodie has chased him away this morning. See comments for pictures of Axel.

Axel (AX6) !! so good to see him well

It has been a funky week at the RSPB Loch Garten, osprey nest. Speed fishing, rare catch of the day and ospreys bucking gender roles. Here is the best of the nest...

Both chicks have now been ringed and weighed...
Mae’r ddau gyw wedi cael eu modrwyo a’u pwyso...
Chick 1 (on the left): Blue 7B5
Female, Wing-Length 335mm, Weight: 1755g
Chick 2 (on the right): Blue 7B6
Female, Wing-Length 323mm, Weight: 1730g
Now we're fairly sure of gender - remember, it is very difficult to determine when they're this young - we'll be launching our osprey naming poll. Full details coming soon.
In meantime, don't forget you can join us at Llyn Brenig to watch the ospreys - either from the Osprey Lookout or the Osprey Hide - or at home via our very popular livestream.

Woodland Trust

Saturday July 8

Our Nest 2 chick was ringed this morning.

It may take a day or two for the ringer to get back to us with an estimate of sex, and hopefully some photos.
Once we know if our chick is male or female we will start the discussion on giving it a name. We ask that everyone holds off on suggesting names until that time.

Image

Sunday July 9

Our Nest 2 chick was ringed and measured on Saturday morning, with the number LY7.
Its biometrics suggest its a boy!

Our naming discussion is now underway - please check the comments for more details.
