This is a photo of Ervie the 2021 Chick from the Port Lincoln Nest who was last year fitted with a Satellite Tracker. The Trackers provide valuable data once the bird leaves the nest. Data that was not previously available and that is helping to build knowledge vital to the Osprey Recovery Program.
Today the 2022 Chick from the Port Lincoln Osprey nest has been fitted with a tracker and banded by Ian Falkenberg who has approval under the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme and who is a current Wildlife Ethics and Scientific Research Permit Holder
This post seeks to answer some questions regarding trackers to the best of my knowledge.
Prior to fitting the tracker the bird is weighed, measured and assessed for condition. The bird tracked today was the heaviest so far tracked in this project weighing in at 1700 grams. She is a female bird and we have called her Zoe.
The tracker weighs 30 grams. It is fitted using a harness made from kevlar tape. The harness is made up of tapes that go over and under the birds wings paying special care to not interfere with any flight feathers. Fitting is a precise task to ensure that the fit is not too loose and not too tight. The harness comes to the breast of the bird and is stitched with cotton which is designed to have the whole harness and tracker fall off in approximately four years by which time it is anticipated that the bird will be close to nesting. During the next few weeks the birds normal preening will allow the harness to fit comfortably to the bird.
Tracking downloads are provided to the researcher twice a day. This will show
- the length of initial flights after fledge
- where the bird goes when she eventually leaves the nest in late January or early February
- where she forages
- where she perches particularly at night
- if the bird does become a mortality then the tracker will indicate the location allowing for recovery and further analysis of the cause.
All of this data is vitally important to assist planning for the recovery of Osprey in South Australia.
We thank Ian for his dedication in the preparation for Tracking, the absolute care he shows in the execution of his work and his ongoing commitment to Osprey.
Thanks also to Shark Cage Diving - Calypso Star Charters who provide the boat and Skipper for this work.
