The earliest documented fledge was 56 days in a nest with 4 chicks. On average, they spend 65-72 days in the nest, depending on the food available.

Hatch Times:
June 12th - #1 is today 73 days old / #1 fledged on August 21 at 7:43 AM
June 14th - #2 is today 71 days old / #2 fledged on August 21 at 9:32 AM
June 15th - #3 is today 70 days old / #3 fledged on August 20 at 8:39 AM

Storklets #2 and #3 hatched in the darkness. Could be they are 72 and 71 days old.

no food today and only 1 feeding yesterday. Most of the food for one storklet. The third was not on the nest, the second came in as almost all fish was eaten by the first. Last feeding before was July 20!

It is believed that they can find food themselves at this age. (Chat) This is more depressing to me than what happened here. I have been observing this food shortage for weeks. It got less and less. Since the end of July it would have been just enough to feed one of them well.
I mean, what do we learn from it ... they can survive with little food so long that we don't have to watch what happens.

I think the other two are the without food for long. Actually, I don't want to think about what will happen to them now. There is no food in this area. A feeding station has been set up 200 meters away. Maybe it will be found ...

When food would be available then they could find food for themselves...but it seems there is nearly nothing at this time. The last weeks Grafs brought much to less for them. The number of feedings during the days were terrifying.
You are right, for us it is better, that they are not ringed or haven't an transmitter.
Do you think, Grafs is still in the area?
btw. I went rewind and in the early afternoon the storklet pooped one drop on the nest...

A half minute before he/she made a poop- I guess there came only a drop or nothing- the cam made a short jump, so I could not see it.
I feel so sorry for these beauties, nobody can help them...

Good Morning everyone!

Many of my contributions have disappeared in other threads too!
now I see! The posts from August 25th have disappeared. not only here

Today, the work of the Looduskalender website and forum was disrupted.

right now I check my records and found an interesting episode.

After the first storklet leave the nest on August 23 and didn't come back, someone landed on the left. He flew away and the Storklets followed his departure with their eyes .. they turned and looked towards the forest on the right. One of the two, the eldest, took courage and flew behind. I already saw it yesterday, but only the departure and wondered how it could be that he chose this route. Now I have the explanation

It could be it was flying with Grafs!
Since someone was often on the left and it wasn't a feeding, I wonder if Grafs tried to lure them out of the nest and fly with him.
But I don't think storklets would have been able to fly long distances.

Good Morning!

Yesterday the nest remained empty all day

Nest was empty early morning too. They are gone.


Most likely Grafs is singing in the forest~6:26 PM 2021/08/24


The little ones can't look for food themselves yet .. We saw in the pictures, that it was begging for food from a plastic stork .. I don't think that everything is good for the storklets. They were far too young and are totally without experience. They lack the time in the nest with sufficient care after they have been able to fly. They didn't have time to get to know the area ... nothing
Observations show that they need to learn from their parents. There were no more parents here in the end .. Grafs stayed away ...
Now we know what late broods means. It is the wrong time. They depend on food that is available during the normal breeding season.
To make matters worse, the weather was unusually cold and wet at the end of August and is still.

Birdfriend, I don't know. There is no evidence to confirm that feeding is done outside of the nest.
Had it been observed, it would be documented in my book.

One more thing, before I write nonsense, I have to check it out.I think we, you and I, heard a feeding outside of Ozols and Ziles nest?it was when Ziluka slipped from the branch .. but it may be that she was only begging on the ground.

Aleksejs Šaripins No vakardienas, kameras priekšā mūsu cālis vairs nav atrādījes. Vakar viņš pie barotavas uzturējās vairāk par 40min.
Gan vakar, gan šodien pie barotavas joprojām uzturas zivju gārnis. Tas barotavu nepamet.
Dažās bildēs, gārņa uzvedība liecina par to, ka blakus ir vēl kāds, bet, tas protams ir tikai minējums.

Alexei Sharipin As of yesterday, in front of the camera, our chicken is no longer present. Yesterday he stayed at the feeder for more than 40 minutes.
Both yesterday and today, the heron is still staying at the feeder. It does not leave the feeder.
In some pictures, the heron's behavior suggests that there is someone else nearby, but of course it's just a guess.

As Maris wrote. they may fly 50m, 100m, or a few kilometers .. up to 50km.
Who should search a radius of 50 km? Who has that much time?

BTW: Well Makov is not a wilderness.
In the wilderness gray heron and black stork, like Egret, are together at the food table
