Re: Goshawk nest in Riga 2020 - 2021
I wasn't actually watching it, I heard it in the background and rewound. Seeing him yesterday, I thought he had swallowed the second one and I had to go over it several times but it's nice to see him more times.
Have you ever heard of jackdaws (corvus monedula)?
One of its sounds is also similar to that of the goshawk.
Good night

Good morning
Unlike the other corvids, they are usually not a threat to our birds. Now in autumn the crows come back from the fields to the housing estate.
Funny that you write it. 2 or 3 days ago there were crows in the oak tree in front of the house and I think it was a couple! I told my husband that it sounds like the Goshawk. At least the male was gentle in his tones, also with sounds similar to 'Gjak'. The female was just noisy.
A lot happens in this oak - all year round. It's like a gathering place for birds, insects, and squirrels. When we still had the owls here, we often heard their calls from this tree. Loud ... beautiful!
A pair of magpies built a completely new nest - it was robbed by the crows. For a few days now, crows and magpies have been arguing here again. This tree is very popular.

Today I have a day off. Maybe we'll be lucky on a sign from the H's.
Have a nice day!
Yes, we even have one of them at the bird feeder on a regular basis.Have you ever heard of jackdaws (corvus monedula)?

Magic, the usual. If I had time, nobody shows up.
But it's not that they aren't there.
(Not all calls are noted with a time stamp.)
08:04:23 - 35 Excited calls from something in the distance. Two bright voices.
11:38 again, twice
In between there were casual calls
16:07 close and only a short sound, no 'gjak'
16:11:18 A very clear noise that can mean take-off / landing or a change of position.
16:13:39 - 45 flapping wings, fast
16:30 short call
16:52:43 - 47 not immediately but good to hear a goshawk.
17:44 to hear unexcited calls in the area again.
17:46 to hear movement in the branches again.
Meanwhile, 4 members of the thrush family feel comfortable and safe in the nest tree at the same time.
One flew away, three stayed. Blackbird male and also a female, soft brown in the breast?

I have to rewind. I probably won't make it through the day completely.
07:12 removes excitement
07:25 again, but another voice
08:08 tender, quiet but close - I suspect H21
08:12 now more demanding - yes, probably H21

08:20 very tender. Well H44?
08:44 Call of a Goshawk in the distance, think one of our (H21) - not in a good mood.
Well, parenting is over. Now there is work to be done on the garden fence.

14:59 H21 may be chirping in the area.
15:09 In the distance the call of a Goshawk - contact call.
15:13 Now a little excited, researcher.
I suspect H44.
15:17 This goshawk is not alone - his reputation is very definite.
Probably both are a bit away on the garden fence.

16:50 In the distance (far away) we hear the bright calls of the Goshawk.
Meanwhile, the Jay croaks in the common territory.
However, the calls of our H's are getting closer.
We can both hear ... very sweet, sweet and warm.
They are only for themselves. They don't have a mission to fulfill right now.
Meanwhile 16:54
16:56 Master Jay

18:08 The blackbird on the side branch flies to the left and pays attention to the red marked spot -> there is a goshawk moving. The plumage suggests it strongly.
Heard nothing, no signs but they are there.

18:12 Goshawk calls
18:13 'Gjaks' ... probably H44
18:14 he seeks ... calls, moves
18:15 Movement in the wood, its sounds barely audible ... very gently.
I think H21 is around too. There is a short dart distant.

I have no idea who pulled it off. Goes through nagging and goes again.
Sounded a little annoyed.
At this point in time no sign of our H's - but what does that mean?

Hm, only a little presence of our H's today.
Although I was looking for work a lot, I was always in danger of skipping something.
15:36 Goshawk calls in the area - a crow too.
15:45 the Goshawk again
18:01 away but safely within the fence - at first it sounded relaxed but the call became demanding, excited.
18:03 now definitely nervous
18:11:46, 12:41, 13:06 'Gjak' (H44 )
I think from my point of view I only heard one of our H's today.
Tomorrow, with more time, I hope to hear both again.

Quietly, without a sound, the Goshawk flies to the edge of the nest.
Flutters on the side branch, back into the nest and over the left side it flies down and away.

11:33 - 35 Jay croaks in his area.
11:35 removes the calls of a goshawk
And the Jay continues croaking....
12:32 Goshawk calls.
Now closer to the terrain. Sounds like H44 again.

12:48 H44
Now very close and with soft tones.
13:03:52 - 13:06:00
At first I was pleased to have probably heard H21 in the distance.
Their voice is getting closer too, but what is happening?
It seems to me that another bird was also involved.
I will continue to hear. Perhaps the solution will emerge.

13:06:27 The voice can now be heard from a distance.
Just my guess: Maybe H21 followed an uninvited intruder and drove him out of the vicinity of the nest. (At times two voices can be heard in the distance) Maybe a juvenile again?
According to the voice, H21 was angry anyway.

Clear and close.
13:32:08/09 still calling.
13:33:38 - 43 Slightly moved away but still close.

14:40:23, 42:09 'Gjak'
It seemed to me that I heard it even more often.
14:49:04 A goshawk pulls a few meters past the nest to the left.
Earlier at 49:01 a breaking branch could be heard but it was probably just a coincidence.
Today people seem to be working in the undergrowth or private green areas. It sounds like autumn cleanup. A little restless but it doesn't seem to bother our goshawk.

17:54 Wonderful how the evening is calm ....
I heard calls again:
16: 46/47, 17:04 in the field
17: 40: 51/52 'Gjak'
It's worth watching later in the evening too. Sometimes their soft calls could be heard in the twilight.
