Hello Liz :hi: and Solo :hi: sova, Heloise and all the others :)

that are really not nice news.
So are all the migration information might give a help, where they have landed and by looking for a factury or a field of mining anything next to their stops or the river that passes ? *puh
Not easy...
May be to analyse the water will easier possible and be paid in respect of the danger to humans and all the other animals and plants, too ?

Best wishes and keep healthy !
visit

PS:
Question 1:
Unfortunately in the article is not said which kind of parasites are meant.
If they sucks blood, may be leechs ? (a little big), or ticks ?, worms ?
A medicine for the young birds, ok. But i think, that won't help for a long time.
Why are they so much infected with these parasites ?
A consequence of the weaker immune system cause of the Hg ?
Or a higher concentration of parasites - why and where ?

Question 2:
In the article was written about catfishes and Heloise, you said, these are Bubo bubo, that's an Owl (in German Uhu). But are you sure ?
article wrote:Catfish are not migratory birds, they mostly nest on the coast and often feed on seabirds and fish.
I cannot imagine a Bubo bubo with such a way of life, fishing and feeding fish and seabirds.
A Bubo bubo is living in a forest or in a landscape with some trees, shelters and is hunting different preys.
So i still wonder whether catbirds are not different animals than Owls...
(i thought of seagulls, may be very wrong (too) g)
Edit: had reasd and written it wrong, too.
Not catbirds, but catfishes - and that may mean an order of fishes: the Siluriformes.

Hi visit, yes they are meant! Urmas saw them with the storklets now and then. He usually examines them for leeches.

BTW: In Germany is also mercury in small rivers. The rivers are polluted. Only 8% of our rivers are good.

Kassikakud pole rändlinnud, nad pesitsevad enamasti rannikul ja toituvad sageli merelindudest ja kaladest.

Estonian Kassikakk =Bubo Bubo :D I think here is meant the Bubo blakistoni (Riesen-Fischuhu)

Hello, visit and Liz01! :hi:

Thank you for your comments!

I am Estonian and I also carefully read this article on the website of the original source, on the Environmental Board webpage. These birds have been mentioned several times in the article and they are really kassikakud (in Plural, Singular - kassikakk)

https://www.keskkonnaamet.ee/et/uudised ... und-kesine

"As it is currently unclear where mercury enters the body of endangered birds of prey, in 2021 the Environmental Board ordered the installation of satellite transmitters for young kassikakud (I write here: "owls") to study them more effectively. "" Hopefully, this will give us clarity on where "owls" move and feed more accurately, and through that, an idea of possible sources of mercury. "

From Wikipedia (thanks Liz!): "in Estonia, it is a rare breeding bird that breeds unevenly, mainly in coastal areas."

It may be really a "Riesen-Fischuhu" in German :D

Have a nice evening!

P.S.
From this page
https://www.owlpages.com/owls/species.php?s=1240

"Hunting & Food: Eagle Owls have various hunting techniques, and will take prey on the ground or in full flight. They may hunt in forests, but prefer open spaces.
Eagle Owls will eat almost anything the moves - from beetles to roe deer fawns. The major part of their diet consists of mammals (Voles, rats, mice, foxes, hares etc...), but birds of all kinds are also taken, including crows, ducks, grouse, seabirds, and even other birds of prey (including other owls). Other prey taken include snakes, lizards, frogs, fish, and crabs."

Yes, you are right. Unfortunately, the main page article is still only in Estonian. Maybe sometime later in English as well.

The Google translator translated the text into Finnish quite well, but the "kassikaku" remained unclear.
In Finnish it turned into "kissa kakku" (cat cake)
