:hi: all

The deer cam season is coming to an end soon. Before that, on April 13 at 1:00 p.m., RMK hunting specialist Uno Vait will summarize the season in front of the camera and remember the most colorful moments together with zoologist Tiit Hunt, leader of the nature blog and nature cameras. An impressive collection of deer antlers found in the vicinity of the deer camera during this season is also presented. :D

00:07 Nilson, who visited for the first time since he lost his antlers a month ago and brought one to Uno (Nilson was also the last stag to leave this night), and Timothy seems to be growing 2 antlers this year, but one is still much smaller

Last season Vince only visited 2x on the last 2 days of the season (after losing his antlers), that's why it's his "job" to announce that the season is ending. This season he visited 5x but again only after losing his antlers and only in April.

19 stags visited this night.

I think I figured it out, the antlers starting from the left: Homer, Nilson, Ervin, Ford, Sander both antlers, Forest, Elias, a visitor who had 5+4 antlers (this is the one with 4 tines), Tristan, Timothy. :D

12:59 Uno and Tiit :D

They said the antlers will be removed this evening but the camera will work until tomorrow morning.

Thank you to all who cared that we could watch this beautiful creatures over such a long time. Thank you for the food - that helped this deer and friends through the hard wintertime. God bless you all who posted textes and pictures. I never learn to know the name of the deer, but I adore how they look. So I am looking forward to the next season. Have a good time.

Thank you, Uno and Tiit.
I have seen you. Perhaps Hellem or rongike would be so kind as to briefly report the most important things in English?

So here is the summary.

The tenth season of the deer cam is closing soon. The antlers will be removed around 5 or 6 p.m. today, although the camera will run for another night.

The first deer, three individuals, were brought to the island 57 years ago, in 1965. Some years later, about a dozen deer, from Latvia, were added. It is possible that some deer migrated to Saaremaa from the neighbouring island of Abruka, and perhaps even Hiiumaa. Today the number of the deer is 4100. The 10 000 ha hunting area around the feeding site is inhabited by ca 150 individuals. Tiit Hunt presumed that roughly 1/3 of them visits the feeding site.

Stags and hinds with foals form separate herds, and the oldest stags often roam alone. It is notable that this year the feeding site hosted not only stags, but also hinds and foals. Besides the deer, wild boar females with seven and four piglets, respectively, were visiting. Roe deer passed occasionally. The carrot-loving vegan fox was a remarkable phenomenon. Also, three human (or maybe not human?) individuals were spotted: Santa Claus with his little assistant (to whom the presenters were grateful) and the antler raider (who should have shown his face).

The deer cam had been on for 10 seasons (since 2014), and the current feeding site was preceded by another one less than 0,5 km away. At first, there were very few visitors. Then "carrot tracks" were created to lead the deer to the site, and today they come in abundance. The main natural food is grass, and the juicy silage brought to the site is basically grass. Carrots, however, are their favourite. Tiit Hunt once counted that a stag ate ca 40 fatty carrots within an hour. Salt is also important, particularly for antler growth. The frequent winter storms were fatal to many pine branches, which the deer peeled. Fortunately, they cause little damage to the standing pine trees here.

One of the most memorable moment was a deer taking a mud bath in front of the camera. This behaviour would be expected in mating season (from early September to mid-October), but not in January. The sound and the mud cloud when the stag shook the mud off was remarkable. The incident of knocking over the carrot box from the previous season was recalled, as well as the event when a stag kicked the antler of another stag off.

Next, the antler exhibition was briefly described. A full set of antlers in the middle; the antlers on its both sides may or may not form a pair (difficult to determine). Never before have they found so many antlers from within the camera view. Once there was only one stag with a name, Hubert, but now the deer fans have named them all. Rongike is the expert and has even made a web site with numerous pics, which is an admirable effort. Uno and Tiit admit that they have had not enough time to learn the faces and names.

Co-operation. Everyone knows Uno. The younger man "with a straighter posture" is Neeme Sepp. The project is the responsibility of the State Forest Management. Carrots are the product of Laheotsa OÜ, and they are delivered by Sikassaare Vanametall. The carrots are stored at Metsa Johani Farm. Omar Neiland takes care of the streaming.

Hopefully people like the cam [note from the editor: we do!]. There will be season 11. It is not known yet where the cam goes for the summer. Watch the goshawk cam in Tartu and the gulf cam (lahekaamera) in Häädemeeste. See you in autumn!

Thank you very much, Trine, for your detailed report  .

It is very interesting.

Thanks to all those involved who make the observation possible.

Especially to Uno and Neeme (finally I know his name  ) for the hard work of delivering the food.

Santa Claus with his little assistant was a very nice surprise. Greetings to the assistent  . I have already thanked Santa Claus above  .

Thanks to all users especially rongike and I look forward to next season.
