Good morning to all :hi:

Anne, thank you very much for the detailed information!
That must look really different now than we already know it. :D

Interesting to read that Udu and Tuul, northwest of the nest, were.
Then it goes south and they will come back, if everything goes well, again in three years.
I am already very curious where the three of them will spend their winter ...
Hello, Sova
Yes, it is really different!
The lines of the graphs now go more often 'up and down'. :D
The leg (and thus the transmitter) is of course in a different position while flying, standing on one leg, standing on 2 legs, stretching etc

I sincerely hope that these three storklets (and all the others too of course) successfully migrate south.
Yes, it will be very interesting to see where they will spend their first winter.

I worry about the storklets in Jõgeva County. They do not receive enough food currently.
Jan didn’t find the little feeding pond that Kotkaklubi set up, and meanwhile herons empty it.
Putting fish directly on a BS nest is apparently not an ideal solution either …
And on the Latvian nest the situation is as worrisome.

Good news!
Our PIKNE was already moving south yesterday! :loveshower:

Yesterday evening (last shown location), s/he was about 90-95 km from the nest

Of course, I am not allowed to show an exact location yet, until Urmas or Jo give permission.

Next data session expected: 2021-08-23

Bon voyage, little Pikne! Take care!

Around 09:00 this morning, Karl II was still in the (wider) nest area.

No new locations have been sent for Udu and Tuul, so far.
Last known locations: 18 and 17 August respectively. They may be much further away by now, in any direction.
I hope they are OK.

Both storklets chose wrong direction, it is not good. :puzzled:
Hello asteria :hi:

The first days after Udu and Tuul left the nest, the weather was not suitable to start their migration southwards. There was a lot of rain. They had strong winds and even thunderstorms.

We do not know where they are currently. Let’s hope they are well.

Hello Tatiana!

Soon there will be Tracker Maps posted on the forum, I suppose.

Then everyone can see the flights of our three storklets + Karl II, in detail.
I hope that many members will help to analyse and document their journey!
Everyone is welcome to post pictures (maps) of their flown track... or to look for information and/or photos (or street views) of their resting places, foraging places etc.

Would someone like to do so? That would be great and very helpful! :2thumbsup:

Everyone is really very welcome to contribute!

Edit:
Birdmap has been set to autumn migration.
The Black Storks are not shown yet.

09.10.56 here it is the main Pikne`s marks left to us as a souvenir.
He was so interested in the camera that he tried to make something special for memory. :rotf:
No torrential rains could wash them away.

Today, since the morning, the sun has been shining near the nest and raindrops can be heard from time to time... there will probably be a lot of mushrooms in the forest.

I imagine how it smells of pine needles and grass in the forest... as the pines rustle overhead, the birch leaves rustle, it's like I'm standing there, standing under the nest... I don't know if there is an aspen and an elm, a willow and an oak in this place, but near the nest I see pines and birches and hear them. Just like near my house...
Very beautiful and all the conditions for storks (especially with Urmas... :D ) So I would like to wish our storks to return here.

Hello!

Anne, I am very, grateful for all the information!
Thank you for remembering me! I was driving through Estonia, hiked a lot, read the forum and am aware of everything, but couldn't write anything while driving!

Thank you all very much for your great contributions!
:2thumbsup:
I'm very glad Pikne left yesterday. S/he (I think he is a boy 8-)) is almost as cunning as Karl II, waited until the last moment for his father's food, and only then left. The weather has also improved.

I fully agree!

I'm glad we were watching this nest life together
Thank you for the beautiful photos, videos and interesting comments, dear Swenja, Anne7, Tatiana60, sova, balistar, Biker, Liz01, Michi, Gaby, Owlie, Florinda, Poliff, Trine, Treia, Bibibu... and all who commented here!
And of course special thanks for the track data now and in the future, Anne7, to you!

I worry about our young storks, but I hope that they have inherited the best qualities of Karl II and Kaia and they are all real survivors, they live long and happy lives and we will see them again! And it would be interesting to see them when they had red legs and a beak...
I'll add one of my favorite photos:

Good evening, everyone!

Heloise, good to see you back!

Great news! :loveshower:

Our Udu, who initially flew in northwestern direction after leaving the nest in bad weather conditions, has flown a very remarkable trajectory. :faint:

I will not post tracker maps yet, until Urmas or Jo give permission.
But I believe it’s safe to describe his/her amazing flight.

Udu flew over Pärnu, explored the Matsalu Bay, turned back, crossed (near Virtsu) the Suur Strait to the island of Muhu, continued his flight to the island of Saaremaa, flew southwest-wards over Saaremaa, crossed the Irbe Strait to Latvia, crossed Latvia in southern direction and is currently already in Lithuania. :D

S/he is on the right track now, and flying a nice straight 'line' in the good direction!

What a storklet! Well done, Udu!

Bon voyage! May you have a prosperous journey, little Udu!

Hello, everyone

Hello, Swenja :hi:
Yes, Udu has flown quite a detour.
But the good news is that s/he is on track now!

This morning there has been an OrniTrack data session for Tuul and for Karl II.

Karl II is still in the (wide) nest area.
This morning he was at a familiar spot, at a brook about 20 km from the nest.

Tuul: Although there was a data session, the last known data are still from the 17th of August.
No new or more recent locations or data have been sent. Tuul's battery is at 17%, maybe that's the raison? :puzzled:
I hope everything is OK with Tuul. I worry.

Off Topic

Yesterday a young BS storklet (unringed) was found in Northern Finland, in Kajaani in a bad shape with a weight of only 1870 g acting fearlessly towards people and flying only short distances. Today morning it had no more moved when the local birdlife expert was alarmed to it and it passed away on his arms. It is a very, very rare species so north, some single BS has been seen in very southern Finland earlier, probably come from Estonia, but never so far in north. The bird expert was sorry that he had not been contacted already yesterday, he might have been able to save the storklet then.

EDIT:
The distance from Estonia to Kajaani in Northern Finland is according to Google Maps about 700 kms.

What a sad story, Owlie.
Such a pity that all help came too late for that poor storklet.

Some BS juveniles don't find the right route, are exhausted and starving, and then end up somewhere they don't belong.
Their first migration is extremely difficult.

14:30 Karl II is on the nest! :D

Did he come to make sure that none of his chicks returned to the nest?
