Timmu (new data)

Thank you, Sova!

Timmu
Distance: 6752 km
Last data: 13.11.2021, Ethiopia

On 13.11.2021 Timmu was still in his usual wintering area, a little northeast of Metemma.

Metemma (also known as Metemma Yohannes) is a town in northwestern Ethiopia, on the border with Sudan. Located in the Semien Gondar Zone of the Amhara Region, Metemma has a latitude and longitude of 12°58′N 36°12′E with an elevation of 685 meters above sea level. Across the border is the corresponding Sudanese village of Gallabat.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metemma

Semien Gondar (Amharic: ሰሜን ጎንደር) (or North Gondar) is a Zone in the Ethiopian Amhara Region. This Zone is named for the city of Gondar, the capital of Ethiopia until the mid-19th century.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Gondar_Zone

The Atbarah River (Arabic: نهر عطبرة‎; transliterated: Nahr 'Atbarah), also known as the Black Nile, is a river in northeast Africa. It rises in northwest Ethiopia, approximately 50 km north of Lake Tana and 30 km west of Gondar. It then flows about 805 km (500 mi) to the Nile in north-central Sudan, joining it at the city of Atbarah (17.677°N 33.970°E). The river's tributary, the Tekezé (Setit) River, is perhaps the true upper course of the Atbarah, as the Tekezé follows the longer course prior to the confluence of the two rivers (at 14° 10' N, 36° E) in northeastern Sudan. The Atbarah is the last tributary of the Nile before it reaches the Mediterranean.
For much of the year, it is little more than a stream. However, during the rainy season (generally June to October), the Atbarah rises some 18 ft (5 m) above its normal level. At this time it forms a formidable barrier between the northern and central districts of the Amhara Region of Ethiopia.

Fishing in the Atbarah River, not far from a small settlement (which name I cannot read. Is it Zebach Bahir?). One can see that north of the village is a mine (or quarry), and on the east side is a place of worship.
Edit: Ha, I found it, the name of that village is Wedi Gemzo (ወዲ ገምዞ)

Today's weather forecast for Katrin's area (Kaşıkçı).
Rain, rain and more rain... :slap: And wind!
This isn’t pleasant weather for BS. They don’t like to fly in such weather.
Moreover it is difficult to catch fish in the rain. Heavy rains make the water surface ripple (confusing) and the water turbid and fast flowing. Poor water-clarity and increased water levels may occur.

Good evening everyone!

Me too have been waiting for news about Julge, but unfortunately and apparently there is no news now. Hopefully, though, he’s okay and is already flying in Gibraltar or Africa, or somewhere else?

Solo is also missing, is there any information about her?
Solo sometimes writes in Makov guestbook, besides she created her own forum only about black storks.

December 11th

Hello everyone :hi:

Asteria

Here is Katrin's tracker map for yesterday, December 10th

TRACKER MAP
KATRIN - DECEMBER 10th (entire day)
https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid= ... sp=sharing

Yesterday, Katrin flew 11.7 km
The battery level at 17:54 (UTC+2) was 35%

Katrin was exploring another location in the Bakırçay plain, northeast of Yayakent.
In the evening, Katrin was in the fields east of Dağıstan, near a canal.

Dağıstan is a village in Bergama District in Izmir Province. In fact, it was formed in 1877 when a Lezgian community (12 families) from the Dağıstan region of the Caucasus took refuge in the Ottoman lands as a result of the great Russian exile in the 19th century. They have a good knowledge of the Lezgian language and spoke Lezgian in everyday life until the 1970s. Today, however, the number of villagers who speak Lezgian is very small.
These Lezgins living in the Aegean area continue to communicate with the Dağıstan region. They are still in contact with relatives living in Dağıstan, most of which is now part of Russia. The mayor of the village is Tahir Gül. In his office, swords and similar memories of their ancestors in the Caucasus are on display. (GT)

I hope she could catch plenty of goodies in the creek and went to sleep with a full tummy in ‘her’ forest, next to the quarry.

MORNING UPDATE 12.12 KATRIN

Total distance: 137m
Battery level at 08:37 (UTC+2): 30%

Little Katrin didn't go to sleep in 'her' nearby forest.
This morning she was still in nearly the same place, in the Yayaköy Creek in Yayakent.
I hope Katrin is OK, healthy and well fed.

Today's weather forecast for Yayakent.
Lots of rain again. :slap:

I am now really beginning to doubt whether Katrin is in a suitable wintering area for Black Storks. So much rain could become problematic (both for flying and for catching fish), in my opinion.
It is known that the man-made, very straight ditches in the fields are constructed to evacuate all “excess” water as quickly as possible. And the water that runs from the mountains into the Yayaköy Creek, for example, is likely to become muddy and to flow very fast as well during heavy rains. Both conditions are not really favourable for catching fish.
Black storks need/prefer slow-flowing, shallow, natural and meandering streams/brooks to fish. Or (freshwater) wetlands. Fingers crossed for Katrin.

Edit:
Urmas wrote about the effects of (straight) drainage ditches in agricultural areas (but it was not specifically about this region - the Bakırçay Plain) :
There is massive shortage of food in commercial forest and agricultural landscape, because of drainage affecting during long time and showing irreversible results by now. Nature was able to cope with the first drainage events, but currently it is so widespread and repeatedly renewed, therefore it causes massive loss of biodiversity in running waters. Even Black Stork using very large territory, is not able to find food anymore.
You can compare the situation for creatures in fresh water after renewing of melioration ditches and channels there with a continuous heavy dust storm, where you can't see further than your nose...
