Good evening. :hi:

TRACKER MAP
KATRIN - DECEMBER 12th (entire day)
https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid= ... sp=sharing

Total distance: 1.26 km
Battery level at 17:55 (UTC+2): 28% :slap:

Katrin spent all day in the Yayaköy Creek in Yayakent.
She moved a bit upstream and at 17:55 (UTC+2) she arrived near the quarry (and her previous night area in the forest). Presumably, she covered that distance on foot…
I hope little Katrin is OK.

MORNING UPDATE 13.12 KATRIN

Total distance since yesterday at 17:55 (UTC+2): 81m
Battery level this morning at 08:37 (UTC+2): 26%

Again, little Katrin didn't go to sleep in 'her' nearby forest.
This morning she was still in the Yayaköy Creek south of Yayakent.
I hope Katrin is OK.

Today's weather report for Yayakent.
It rained all night and morning. Katrin must be soaking wet. No wonder she didn't fly this morning.
Around noon it may become a little drier for a few hours. Then it starts raining again.

TRACKER MAP
KATRIN - DECEMBER 13 (entire day)

Total distance since yesterday at 17:55 (UTC+2): 280 m

Katrin barely moved today. I’m very worried.
Let's hope that - apart from the fact that she is troubled by the rain - it is just because she finds food in that place?
She is still in the Yayaköy Creek south of Yayakent.

December 14th

MORNING UPDATE 14.12 KATRIN

I fear we must prepare ourselves for sad news.
This morning neither the XYZ-values nor the location points of little Katrin were OK.
And the temperature of the transmitter dropped.
I'm afraid she may have perished yesterday evening or last night. 😢

I've sent the images and morning tracker map to Urmas, Jo and Juta.

Edit:
Urmas confirmed my thoughts. He replied:
"... Unfortunately you are right ..."

So very sad. Poor little Katrin. I’m so sorry.

For you, little Katrin

Her Journey’s Just Begun

Don’t think of her as gone away –
her journey’s just begun,
life holds so many facets –
this earth is only one.

Just think of her as resting
from the troubles and the fears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.

Think how she must be wishing
that we could know today
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.

And think of her as living
In the hearts of those she touched
For nothing treasured is ever lost –
And she was loved so much.

Hello everyone

Thank you Anne for your daily reporting ...
.... and again * one bird * less ....

Unfortunately, the second chance didn't bring anything. The end was probably * programmed *.
Have a good trip, little mouse ...

Yes, Sova, unfortunately another Black Stork perished. 😢

It is the second time this transmitter will need to be recovered in Turkey.
First our beloved Karula and now little Katrin. Both perished while carrying it.
We will never 'get used' to these losses. It hurts so much every time.

Text and pictures from Birdmap

KATRIN
A juvenile Black Stork hatched in Latvia (wearing a ring with the Latvian code 0XUC, ringed by Maris Strazds in northwestern Latvia on July 4 as one of four chicks), which migrated 200 km north to the settlement of Kiili after leaving the nest and stayed there to stop at a household. Although the host caught fish and put them in the garden pond, it was not enough food for the young Black Stork. Thus, he was captured by the people of the Estonian Wildlife Society and the Environmental Board delivered the caught stork to Tartu, to the animal clinic of the University of Life Sciences under the care of Dr vet Madis Leivits. The young bird was clearly underweight on arrival, 2.5 kg. At the animal clinic, he had to be fed for 11 days until his weight reached normal. He weighed 2.96 kg before being released. Based on the outlook, pictures and measurements, she is probably a female. Maris Strazds asked to be named the stork as Katrin. As we had just sent back a transmitter from Turkish colleagues, it was used for to track Katrin.
We released Katrin in southwestern Estonia near Häädemeeste on September 15. Katrin immediately took off, flew south and disappeared beyond sight. On the first day, however, not far away, because the compass needed calibration so as not to repeat the former mistake of choosing a direction. However, Katrin has flown south and arrived in Poland on September 19 and in Ukraine on September 21. On September 23 she reached eastern Romania, where she spent one month and continued migration on October 24. Already on 25th Katrin crossed Marmara Sea from Europe to Asia, Turkey. Next day Katrin spent in Lesvos island, but since October 27 in valley of Bakircay river, north of Izmir. Up to December 13. During the night between 13/14 she perished at Yayacöy river side.

The complete flight path of Katrin since her release on 15 September near Häädemeeste in SW Estonia, until her death in the night of 13 to 14 December in Yayakent, Kınık district, İzmir province, Turkey.
OrniTrack says that little Katrin has flown 4495 km.

Bigfan, I hope you will stay. We need each other at times like this.

Better news now.
In March of this year we found some dedicated birders in Turkey who spent a lot of time and effort looking for and observing Karula, then recovering the transmitter after Karula's death.

I was able to contact one of that group just 10 minutes ago and now Urmas is in contact with them.
More news as it happens, but maybe not until Thursday.

So beautiful but still so sad.
Katrin and her siblings managed all the difficulties from time to time with the heat and sometimes lack of food in their country of birth. But after a long journey when she decided it was time to leave, fate wanted her otherwise. So unlikely sad right now. The laws of nature are harsh but I will never forget you little Katrin.

Tomorrow, Soner Bekir in Turkey will go to Katrin's location. Let's send him our support and good wishes for his search for our Katrin.

Good evening everyone :hi:

Sova, Polly, Bigfan, Asteria and Thomas
It is always very painful to lose one of our wonderful birds.
But it is comforting to support each other in such moments.

Thanks a lot for your efforts and keeping us informed, Jo

And thank you very much for everything you are doing, Soner
Your help and commitment are not to be taken for granted, and we realise that.
We are very grateful to you. Good luck tomorrow!

And last but not least, also a big thanks to you, Urmas, for everything you do behind the scenes.

Good night.

Sad to repoort that Soner has located Katrin's body. He says that it is still very fresh so death occurred within the last 24 hours.
There is a broken wing. There are power lines 50 m distant. There are dogs around but no sign that a dog had found Katrin.

Urmas has been in contact with him throughout his journey, as have I.
I will post some of Soner's photos of the area soon.

Thank you so much, Jo, Urmas and Soner.

This is indeed very sad news. Poor little Katrin.
She must have broken her wing on the evening of the 11th, on her way back from Dağıstan to Yayakent, I think. Visibility was probably poor due to the rain (and late hour) and she may have hit power lines, perhaps the ones visible in the photo (near Yayakent) I posted on December 11.
We have not observed any flights or longer distances since then. She just kept walking in the Yayaköy Creek. But there was also so much heavy rain.
