Goshawk Nest Webcam in Tartu by RMK 2022 - 2023
This new web camera on a nest of two Goshawks (Accipiter gentilis) near Tartu
is owned by the state forest management centre, RMK or Riigimetsa Majandamise Keskus
The goshawks are named Alla, female and Ruudi, male.
It would be good to know some history of the nest, any off-spring, etc. If anyone has that information, please post it. I will ask Urmas Abel, too.

E-mail from Urmas Abel, which is helpful!
Those Accipiter species nests we have found in 2016. They are the first goshawks who are breeding in Tartu. 2018 me and my friends are conducting charity event and collecting money to buy a transmitter for him.
2019 Urmas Sellis caught the male hawk Ruudi and fitted it with a transmitter. Since then we have information about this bird activity near Tartu. Then I just thought, what if I ask the National Forestry Department to put webcam on the top of this nest.
They accepted my proposal, found the finances and this is the result :) Last year there were four siblings.
Female bird called ALLA and when they were breeding in the RAADI region in Tartu. And it sounds like RAADI RUUDI ALLA and in Estonian language we have similar nice song like RIIDI RAADI RALLA, PAKANE ON VALLA. :)
If you have any further questions please let me know!
Urmas Abel
Can anyone provide a link to that song?

I have copied Polly's post in the other topic in order to bring some informaiton here.
Tomorrow I will try to clean up the GT English text, omitting reference to chickens and owls. for now, thanks to Polly.
Very informative and I think it belongs in the hopefully new topic on page 1.
Many thanks @Hellem!

GTTartu RMK kontori taga aiandis valmistub kanakullipaar pesitsema.
A pair of chickens are preparing to nest in the garden behind the Tartu RMK office. For the first time, we can now observe the activities of hens at the nest in real time.
The rare owl's nest is located on the pine of RMK's garden test stand, at a height of about 14-15 meters. The owl's nest was built in the spring and winter of last year, and at the end of the breeding season, four nice owls were ringed here.
The male bird has been familiar to Tartu bird lovers since 2016, when the bird was operating in the Raadi protected area. That's where he got his name - Raadi Ruudi. However, Alla got a bigger name than Powder and with lighter feathers.
GTRuudi on teadaolevalt ehitanud juba viis pesa, millest kaks on olnud paplil, üks haaval, üks praegusest pesast ligi viiekümne meetri kaugusel lehisel ja viimane siin kaamera ees männil.
It is known that Ruudi has already built five nests, two of which have been in the poplar, one by one, one in the larch almost fifty meters from the current nest, and the last one here on a pine tree in front of the camera.
Ruudi is wearing a transmitter and a ring on his leg so that his movements have been well known since 2019. Throughout the seasons, Kanakull's area of operation has mostly been only within a radius of five kilometers, and on occasional occasions it has flown almost twice as far.
GTKanakull on levinud kogu põhjapoolkera metsavööndi metsades ega ole olnud varem mingi linnalind. Eesti asurkonna suuruseks hinnatakse vaid pisut üle 400 paari.
Seni on kõikidel hommikutel (viiel hommikul) Ruudi jõudnud pesale mõned minutid enne seitset. Näis kas ka homme…
The hen owl is widespread in the forests of the entire northern hemisphere and has never been a city bird. The size of the Estonian population is estimated at just over 400 pairs. We have a fixed bird, can live to be almost twenty years old.
In front of the camera, we now mostly see male birds picking up branch branches and placing them in the nest, from time to time they come and sit on the edge of the nest, splashing down. He has often sat right next to the camera and snapped right into the microphone. So far, every morning (five in the morning), Ruudi has reached the nest a few minutes before seven. Looked like tomorrow too…

Goshawk (Accipiter Gentilis) - located in Tartu /City.
(Tartu is Estonia's second largest city after the capital Tallinn)
Approximately 400 breeding pairs are estimated for Estonia.
The nest was built last winter/spring and is 14-15 meters high. At the end of this breeding season, four chicks were ringed.
Alla
Female, without Ring
Eye color darker to almost orange.
Ruudi
Male, with Ring and transmitter.
The transmitter was installed in 2019.
Ruudi has been known since 2016.
At that time he was employed in the Raadi sanctuary. So his name was derived from Raadi... Raadi - Ruudi.
Ruudi has already built five nests with it. Two of them in poplars, one in a larch .... this current nest on camera here in a pine.
It shows that Goshawk are very flexible and adaptable after all.
I have read a lot and it is written that Goshawk prefer old beeches.
Well, it probably wasn't beech until now.
But where else can you find beautiful old beeches ... .
The transmitter was able to determine that Ruudi restricted his area to a radius of 5 km. Rarely more - but also twice as far.

So far, the pair has been fairly equally involved in nest building.
More or less skillful...
And yet I did not see both at the same time in the nest. I eagerly await this moment.
We are currently only observing their communication with each other acoustically. Alla primarily uses an elongated tone - like a juvenile's begging call.
Hear Ruudi in the nest, Alla in the field
In two days we could hear 6-7 pairings each. Well, just what we can hear.
What else has happened so far since the camera started:

The stream is currently not running. We hear voices and there's a recording but they don't belong to this nest?
Nevertheless a super nice nest !!!!!
Just somehow not that of Alla and Ruudi.
@Fleur, @Hellem ... thanks!

If you have any further questions please let me know!

Can anyone provide a link to that song?

Good morning to all.
We are glad to have Goshawk's new camera, thanks to all the people who make it possible. Although today I have found that there is no transmission, perhaps they are trying to fix the sound-image coordination, we have to wait.
Those Goshawks are spectacular (like all of them!) the winter site is beautiful. According to the eyes, it doesn't seem to me that the male was already so adult, I would like to know if when the transmitter was put on him, it was when he was ringed, but it seems not.
I have already seen access to the nest through a corridor of trees facing the camera.
The female Alla also has a "V" on her tail feathers although less extensive than that of H21.
This link to the song.

Was my thought too - a happy song.
Catchy potential.
Yes, I have questions.
Were Ruudi and Alla the couple here last season?
I only read/understood that was built - not that all was the female
And his assessment of the age of Alla and Ruudi.
And thanks for the troubles about the nest!!!
Thank you too @Jo

I got it that Ruudi was caught in adulthood?
It must have been very young adulthood.
I think ... 3 years old the young man if I understand correctly?
It would be a question for Urmas Abel.

We found these nests of the Accipiter species in 2016. They are the first goshawks to breed in Tartu. In 2018 me and my friends are doing a charity event and raising money to buy a transmitter for him.
In 2019, Urmas Sellis caught the male goshawk Ruudi and tagged him with a transmitter.
