Re: Estonian Eagle Owl Nest 2022, 2023
31.03.2023
02:16 the female gets up and leaves the nest. Since the time it got dark, I have not heard any calls from the male as yet.
02:34 the female arrives back at the nest quietly and settles back on the eggs. While she does so, the male can be heard, obviously very far away. (She has been away quite a long time, has she been waiting for him, or has she hunted a bite for herself?)
02:37 the male is somewhere nearby now and keeps hooting. The female is listening and "chock-ing".
02:40 the male's hooting is becoming fainter now (is he looking for her in the wrong places?)
03:09 One eye watching and one eye dozing
04:20 nothing further happened, all quiet, even the forest.
And I sign off

“Animals, like us, are living souls. They are not things. They are not objects. Neither are they human. Yet they mourn. They love. They dance. They suffer. They know the peaks and chasms of being.” (G. Kowalski) Caveat: Apart from this remarkable sentence I do not agree with his philosophies.

All!
It's a rather unpleasant night here at the owls' nest, windy with strong gusts and snow/sleet/rain.
20:11 the male is calling in a distance
20:18 he is somewhere near now
20:19 IR light switches on
20:20 the female turns her head looking out for he male but he has stopped calling now.
20:58 Preening: she's able to almost reach the place below her beak
22:42 the male's calls approaching from distance
22:43 the female gets up and flies off. Both can be heard. I can see three eggs.
22:55 she comes back, rolls her eggs and settles down again.
From ca. 23:00 on the weather gets from bad to worse. It seems to be foggy, or the camera casing is awash with water, so that the image gets blurry; later the wind gets still stronger.
23:32 loud cracking and snapping branches alert the female on the nest.

00:53 the female sees/hears something and gets up and away - oh girl, in that terrible snow storm!
00:57 she returns to the nest, stands for a while on the side of the box and looks around searchingly. Then she snuggles down in the nest again (probably still hungry).
01:10ff the picture is becoming so blurry now that hardly anything can be seen... (I hope the nest box survives the storm in one piece).
01:28 I think I hear the male calling through the storm noise
02:39-41 IF she did lay an egg tonight, this may have been a likely time. She remained for almost three minutes in that shoulders-up-tail-down position before looking down and rolling eggs. Or she might have just been preening her chest... there is no meaningful screenshot possible - too blurry.
04:13 visibility had improved for an hour or so but now it's gone again. I have not seen or heard the male again
00:53 going out into the storm
01:59 I strongly believe visibility is less than 8 meters...
I have been pondering the question, whether birds of prey have chances at all of finding food in such blizzard or storm... not only is it no fun for the predator to roam about and search, but also the prey animals may not stick their noses out of their burrows, or stay otherwise hidden. And tonight it has been going on for many hours.

I hope they are able to find some food. I have read that at such times the birds of prey go hungry
