Re: Estonian Eagle Owl Nest 2022

20:09. Another short visit by the male.

And I have a question: By this time the breeding season should be quite advanced, shouldn't it? Haven't the Owls settled somewhere else? Will we be able to watch them?

EDIT: Thank you, juta, for your response below.

Hello, rysx!
This pair of Eagle Owls have been breeding in this area for several years. As the previous nest was on private property, local raptor specialist built three platforms for Eagle-Owl nearby in the woods to enable breeding there. One of the platforms was fitted with camera. So, it really seems that unfortunately, our E-Owls chose another nest.

It was a conversation between male and female of this pair. And, yes, in the nest was male. He has a deeper voice

Thanks for the explanation, vainamoinen.

As an owl expert, you have knowledge of their calls and especial: how they communicate with each other.

A bit off topic but, would be very interested in your opinion about voices of two owls i have heard last fall.

I told about it here.
https://www.looduskalender.ee/forum/vie ... 01#p834401

It was really breathtaking eavesdrop on them.
Would you please listen to the recordings I made?

My main question would be:
Is that distinctive call (devils cackle) always a warning?
I suppose as a warning call it would be directed to the second eagle owl something like: "watch out! potential danger"".
Thanks in advance

I'm not big expert about Eagle Owl vocalization. They are very rare in Latvia. As far as I know, normally female answer to male with her song or with her typical contact call. It's strange, that male is singing but female is calling warning call. I have not explanation of this behaviour.

It is interesting that adults visit last days quite often that artificial platform again. Maybe their breeding in other nest failed?
We can't check it right now.
With camera there are transmission problems, that needs also check on place.
