What horrible weather everywhere! A tree broke and crashed down in the background at 20:54:39.

I have a question about this owl's Estonian name:
So 'kakk' is owl, right?
'Kassi' means of or like a cat, right? (Kassipoeg is kitten?)

Kassikakk = cat owl? If so, it's very appropriate and puts other languages' names for this bird to shame.

Habekakk = Great Grey Owl
Loorkakk = Barn owl
Verbakakk =pygmy owl
Händkakk = Ural owl

and so on.... kakk meansowl the rest is for the kind of owl!

Liz :hi: , I think Julius knows that.

As far as I understand it, "kass" means cat, and "kakk" means owl, in Estonian.

So unlike the English speaking people, who call the Bubo bubo "eagle owl", the Estonians seem to use the name "cat owl".

And with their round face, pointed tufted ears (which are not really ears), beautiful big orange eyes, and triangular ‘nose’, these wonderful birds indeed look a bit like cats.
They look more like cats than like eagles, as far as the head is concerned. :D

Their wings are a different story though. :laugh:

The official name of the Eagle owl in Estonian is "kassikakk": kass = cat, kakk = owl, kassikakk = cat's owl

Other names for the Eagle owl in Estonian include "kõrvadega öökull" (owl with ears), "suurispeakull" (owl with big head), "uhuu-kull" (uhuu owl), "jänesekull" (rabbit's owl). We have eight (or nine) different species of owls breeding in Estonia, but it was common in the folklore to distinguish only two types of owls - the one with the ears (Eagle owl) and the other one.

Eagle owl - kassikakk (cat's owl)
Greate grey owl - habekakk (bearded owl)
Ural owl - händkakk (owl with tail)
Tawny owl - kodukakk (domestic owl)
Boreal owl - laanekakk (forest owl)
Short-eared owl - sooräts (bog owl)
Long-eared owl - kõrvukräts (owl with ears)
Pygmy owl - värbkakk (passerine owl)
Northern hawk-owl - vöötkakk (owl with stripes)

Thank you, Triin! :hi:

That’s very interesting!

I love language comparisons.

We call the eagle owl "oehoe"
And the Great grey owl the "Laplanduil" (owl from Lapland = Sápmi?)
The Barn owl is called “kerkuil” (church owl)
We call the Tawny owl “bosuil” (forest owl). And apparently, in Estonian the Boreal owl is called “forest owl” :D . We call the Boreal owl “ruigpootuil” (rough-legged owl).

20:00 Owl calling

Yeah names can be lead to confusion
I was stopped by a man desperately searching for his runaway cat and asking if it was taken by a Tawny Owl
Swedish name for Tawny Owl is Kattuggla or Cat Owl in english
I had a hard time convincing him that they only eat mice and not cats :mrgreen:

Thank you for the extensive explanation, very interesting.

Funnily enough, in Finnish, the Eagle owl is the only owl that doesn't have word 'pöllö' (owl) in its name. The Finnish name for bubo bubo is huuhkaja.
