Re: Estonian Eagle Owl Nest 2022, 2023
17:15? Hanna flies away.
19:45 After their meals the owlets have become drowsy and fell asleep from time to time. Now all have woken up. To get time killed #3 and #1 thought it a great idea to tease #2 a bit:
19:46 #1 and #3 are bickering with #2 in the middle until he has had enough and escapes them

“Animals, like us, are living souls. They are not things. They are not objects. Neither are they human. Yet they mourn. They love. They dance. They suffer. They know the peaks and chasms of being.” (G. Kowalski) Caveat: Apart from this remarkable sentence I do not agree with his philosophies.

20:59 a crow can be heard very near and Hanna arrives immediately.
<rant> </rant>
21:02 Hanna is feeding #2 + #3. #1 approaches to take part in the feast but earns himself a beak hit from #2 whereupon he withdraws offended.
21:15 Hanna and the owlets see/hear something and Hanna flies away. I hear beak clacking.
22:22 the owlets are sitting quietly together, looking out into the forest.
22:52 night view comes on.
23:39 all owlets are sleeping.

00:08 The owlets have slept until about midnight. They have woken up now with the usual wing and leg stretching. Now they are sitting and watching the forest again, but far more attentive than before. There is a general head wriggling and wagging as owls do. It is so funny to behold but impossible to capture in a screenshot.
01:26 Hanna arrives with ...? a heavy prey. I cannot see it at first, but when #1 had hauled it to the pantry I see a big dark, possibly furry animal. What could that be?
01:26 #1 carries the prey Hanna has brought into the pantry. It looks pitch black in the IR picture but it could also be just wet, which would produce the same effect.
01:32 #2 begins working on the big animal in the far corner, but he soon gives up on it.
01:48 I believe #1 has just cast a huge pellet. Or has he found it in the nest? But it is blacker than the others so must be fresh and wet.
01:48 #1 with the pellet
01:55 Now #1 is getting busy at the new animal in the corner. I cannot see it because the other two are sitting in front of it but I see he is pulling hard.
02:00 Perhaps he cannot break it open because he has already given up on it. ... ah, no, he goes back to it and tries again!
02:11 Yes he can! He's eating from it, you can see the furry pieces he is getting torn off it. I wonder what animal it is...
02:27 #1 has finished eating from the new prey. He has been at it for a full half hour!
02:27 #1 stretches his wings after half an hour's hard work! He has made good inroads into the prey for the younger siblings to try as well.
02:31 Now #2 goes and tries his skills on the prey. Unfortunately, we cannot see because he's standing with his back to us. Soon #3 also joins the table round but again, I cannot see if he is able to get something.
02:41 Hm.. it seems #1 hasn't had enough yet, or he is greedy ; he squeezes in behind the others and starts eating again.
02:51 now he's had enough! The other two are still at the prey.
Good night!

Good Morning Askja and all
thanks a lot for great pictures and reporting
i watched Bubo and Bo's nest as they fledged. Here too, the nest is not high off the ground. I think nothing will happen to them. But of course they are endangered on the ground. As far as I know, the chicks have not survive. Right and left wings were found.
Yesterday I read in the newspaper an eagle owl chick fell off a church roof.

3:27 Hanna is hooting and flies in with a prey
3:29 she flew away. #3 is hissing hungry

Good evening all! Liz, thank you!
17:50 (when the stream came back on) Hanna is in the nest. I cannot see what she is doing because of the badly jumping stream. Afterwards she sits on the lower big branch.
18:00 Hanna flies away.
17:59 the owlets are milling about in the nest, all standing on their legs, doing wing stretches one by one.

19:56 The owlets have been lively until about 19:00, going about their day-to-day owlet business. After that they settled down and watched the forest. At the moment two are sitting and I can see a first outstretched leg of someone already sleeping in the back. The stream is very jumpy, there are many minutes missing.
21:15 Nothing much happened during the last hour. The owlets are sitting quietly together, watch and sleep in turn.
21:27 #3 is playing with the little twigs in the foreground, #2 watches him.
21:58 #1 goes into the pantry obviously looking for some food. It seems he didn't find anything there.
22:25 Hanna has brought a prey and I think #3 got it.
22:28 #3 had been busy with his prey in the back but perhaps Hanna realised that he didn't manage very well. After a few stream jumps we see Hanna getting the prey out of the corner and feeding the two younger owlets.
22:31 #1 has been looking on with a sad face... now he couldn't watch it any longer and joined the party. He got a few bites too, then he voluntarily left again (perhaps the bites were too small for him ).
