Both preen.

Kaia steps to the edge of the nest, as if she were about to leave.
Image

But again she doesn’t fly away. She returns to her eggs and rolls them. Karl II watches her, then preens again.
Image

Again Kaia talks to Karl II, briefly this time, and then continues to take care of the nestbowl

17:27:15 Kaia covers her eggs. She’s not in a hurry to leave.

Karl II continues to preen.
Kaia does some nest work while incubating.

17:33:50 Kaia gets up and jumps to the nest edge.
Image

Once more, she doesn't fly out but returns to the eggs and covers them again.

17:41 Kaia gets up again. She does some nest care for a couple of seconds, and covers her eggs again.
Karl II is still preening.

Kaia occasionally dozes off on the eggs, looks every now and then at Karl II, pulls some moss closer to her body as she lies down, rearranges some twigs …
Karl II is still taking care of his feathers. He will have the cleanest plumage ever. :D

17:54:41 Karl II pulls up some branches. Kaia watches him quietly.
Image

17:55 Kaia gets up once more. She says something to Karl II and moves towards the nest edge. Karl II does a PS on the right and goes to the eggs

17:55:33 Kaia flies out.
Image

Karl II is on duty again.

Thanks @Anne7 :hi:
Nice to see that Karl II and Kaia are also spending some time together in the nest.

Karl II briefly airs the nest and covers the eggs again.

I went back to page 1 to find the time of the first night vision pic. It was on April 11 at 20.43. Post by Michi. https://www.looduskalender.ee/forum/vie ... 12#p846812
So daylight has gained by 1 hour and 10 minutes, according to the camera!

Swenja, super pics! The sunlight and trees make a good composition.
It looks like you are all alone today. Thanks for doing a great job.

You're welcome! @Jo UK

The last third of incubating the eggs has come. Karl II still has a lot of work to do. It still needs branches, moss and grass.

Karl II works on the nest hollow.

Sometimes we see Karl II or Kaia touching the eggs with their toes (feet). That makes me wonder if they can feel something about the life inside the egg. Do they feel that their is life? That life is growing and changing. Or is it just a random movement with no such meaning atttached to it? What do members think?

I don't know if black storks have such a keen sense of touch that they have a special ability to get information from the eggs through their toes.
But maybe they can feel the warmth and vibration that chicks make in the egg by moving?
Birds are supposed to have a good sense of touch on their toes.
@Anne7 We thought about it last year.

Maybe Kaia said to Karl II that there's movement in the eggs.

Karl II gets up, loosens the nest floor, shakes the feathers, rolls the eggs and covers the eggs again.

Good evening everyone.

Sorry I have not contributed today, Swenja. I have some family concerns on my mind at the moment. And I'm feeling tired.

Jo, Swenja, :hi:

Yes, we have noticed on several occasions that BS seem to be touching their eggs gently on a regular basis. If I remember correctly, UteL was the first to point it out to us, several years ago.
At the time, some responses were that they probably step on their eggs by accident, that BS probably don't see well at close range (don't have good depth perception).
Personally, I don't believe that. Black storks can catch a bumblebee with great accuracy. They grab it with the tip of their beak in the blink of an eye. And they certainly need excellent close-up vision when fishing or catching a snake (right behind its head to avoid being bitten!).
So there is a clear difference between the times they indeed accidentally step on their eggs (e.g. when they walk backwards, or when there is turmoil on the nest because of a threat), and the times they very carefully put their toes on the eggs.
As always, it is easier to observe a behaviour than to explain why they behave as they do. I remember there was a study that pointed out that birds have very sensitive legs and feet. Because developing chicks have a metabolism and thus produce heat, and because fetuses have a heartbeat, it would not surprise me personally if Black Storks can indeed feel whether the chicks are developing well. Or at least whether an egg contains a living chick or not.
It has been a long time since I looked up any scientific literature on the subject. I should give it another try.

In all these years of observation, my wonder and deep admiration for what Black Storks are capable of has only increased.

I would like to thank you sincerely for all the great work you do, Swenja!

Thanks, Anne. Yes, we do see them very deliberately and carefully, touching the eggs. So as well as their brood patch, they will sense heat and maybe movement with their feet. Nearer to hatching time, maybe they will touch the eggs more frequently. Then that information tells them when to bring more nest materials ready for the great day!

Many thanks @Anne7 and yes, I share this admiration for black storks.
