Black Stork Nest in Karula 2022
by Urmas » July 26th, 2022, 4:08 pm

Next message is not that fun...
As there was difficult to control trail cam near Eedis nest we checked situation on place. All four chicks are predated there! Now, looking from memory card of camera, we could say that first chick was predated in evening 16th of July, two chicks in 21st of July and last one in 22nd of July.
Because of certain delay of taking of photo or video by trail camera, no any signs of visible predator. Seems it happened always so quickly, that camera was not able to fix the action. Only with two last cases we could hear some seldom wing flapping under the nest. No voice of chicks on ground nor voice of predator.
Half eaten (by bird of prey) bodies of chicks were 30-60m from nest. According the time of predation (full day) and speed of attack, dense trees around and behaviour pattern of predation it was Goshawk, most probably.
So, one orphan chick is left, in Karula nest.
Our volunteers family brought more fish to Eedi, as there female stork did not show last two weeks and chicks were smaller. But we stopped feeding of Eedi, to pay more attention to Karls nest. Eedi should manage by himself.
I don't know, if you want to see predated chicks of Eedi?
So very very sad....
why did it have to happen something like this again?

Bonus Part I ~Jan & Janika! Rescue of the chicks💕~April- June 6th 2022

The nestlife until the rescue the chicks summarized in 30 minutes.
Dr. Madis Leivits, President at Estonian Veterinary Association
Estonia and Urmas Sellis, Member of Kotkaklubi, have thought very carefully about what to do to save the remaining chicks. This had never been done before, so it was uncertain how it would end.

Without Jan, Janika could not raise the chicks. It was impossible for her, and all observers knew it. Urmas decided to intervene and try to save the chicks. As first he was feeding them at the nest using a decoy stork. But that wasn't a long-term solution. They decided to get the chicks from the nest.

Bonus Part II~Hopitalization of the remaining chicks~5. June -27. June

The chicks developed very well in the clinic. Contact with humans was limited to a few exceptions, so they could not get used to humans. This was important for their continued life in the wilderness if the project is successful. No one knew what was going to happen because it had never been done before.
Dr Madis Leivits built them a nest that matched the natural nest in the forest.
A plastic tube with an artificial plastic head in the shape of a black stork was made. Dr Leivits called him Toru (in english Pipe)
A decoy stork was screwed to the edge of the nest so the chicks always had visual contact with the "Mom". They interacted with this stork as if it were actually their Mom. They learned a few things, like taking fish out of "Dad's" beak.
BTW: They got rings to distinguish them. The all hatched on the same day!
on June 27 the clinic camera went off

Part III (Karula Nest) will be done later .. tomorrow or after tomorrow.. I need a break

I don't know why Jan's death still bothers me so much.. I'm still infinitely sorry.
The whole tragedy could not have been greater. I hope Janika is alive... and Bonus? Will he continue to be lucky in life?.....

the nest is untouched. Looks like Janika never returned to this nest. I looked through many files.. no indication that she or any other black stork was at the nest.

Thanks everyone for the kind words! It was my pleasure making this videos.
I started a little too early to make the videos. Unfortunately Jan's arrival and Janika's arrival are missing. I will still make these events available as a video. soon...

and i will make a video entitled, "Karl's family season 2022" .. that will take time.

Thank you so much, Liz! for making this available. The only impediment is the language  , which, of course, is not your 'fault' nor your task. (-> Invitation to all others who have not followed the cam regularily to read the thread in this forum as guests). -Are these two engaged youngsters Dr Madis' kids?

Susanne, :hi: you're welcome :D

Of course I don't understand a word either. But I love this language, it sounds beautiful to my ears. This also applies to Latvian!
I'll do my best to type everything into GT. But that will still take a while. After that I'll make a video with English subtitles.

Tell me, is there any data on the weight of Bonus at the moment of settling it in a new family? I'm wondering if he gained weight before the backpack was put on him... :book:

Thank you very much for the Bonus-video!!!

I can understand a word here and another there in Estonian, because the language is a bit similar to Finnish, but I can't do any kind of translation with the knowledge of a few words.
