Re: Lesser Spotted Eagles - Latvijas Dabas fonds ligzda eglē 2022 - Anna und Andris
Lesser Spotted Eagle (Clanga pomarina) nest in Zemgalē, Latvia
This nest is located on the western edge of Zemgale. It was found in 2018 when eagles nested successfully and one young bird left the nest. However, as the researchers discovered, it did not experience its first flight to the wintering sites - early 2019, the remains of an adult young bird were found on the ground about 100 meters from the nest. The nest is built in a spruce at a height of 17 meters, in a stable fork of three branches. It is a typical small Lesser Spotted Eagle nest - about half of all LSE nests in Latvia are built in the spruce trees, and a large part of them are built in such places where branches have formed a fork. Judging by the size of the nest and the condition of the material, the nest is at least five years old.
Jānis Ķuze and Jānis Rudzītis placed the camera system at this nest. Thanks for the support of Janis Kažotnieks and Renate Kviese!
The live camera operation at the LSE nest is provided by the Latvian Fund for Nature within the framework of the project "Providing Lesser Spotted Eagle Protection in Latvia" (LIFE AQPOM), which is financially supported by the European Commission LIFE + program and co-financed by the Latvian Environmental Protection Fund Administration.

The camera did not work from May 31 to June 6 afternoon.
As she took off we saw an eaglet. It probably hatched on June 5th.
Our Latvian member, žubīte ST saw the chick yesterday. But only for a moment.
Therefore exact hatching time is not known

July 27 an adult WTE landed on the nest

Sveiki!
GT:
Hello!
Comment on yesterday's sea eagle visit:
The bird is old, ringed in 2007 in Latvia (color combination "orange over blue" on the left leg), unfortunately, more information cannot be extracted from the rings, the six-legged visitor on the sensor glass interferes. I think it is a male, relatively small and slight.
Although you can't see it for sure, I think that the little eagle was saved by the camera lens, which in this case is relatively close to the nest, and also covered with a protective glass (larger reflective surface than an uncovered sensor).A young LSE of this size can be carried away by a Goshawk, it would have little chance against a serious white tailed eagle.

This always was one of my favourite nests - I will never forget Grincs. And Anna is one of my favourite birds. So good to see her back.

Last season's Andris put in SO much late work on the nest, I have to hope it will be him.
He utterly charmed Liz01 with so much unexpected work.
