Re: Goshawk nest in Riga 2023
Hello Polly and alls.
I also believe that they will not breed but until recently they have shown signs that they would. When they have several nests that they fix, they are usually close and it does not seem the case.
I have seen so many things in the Goshawks that I can believe any strange behavior even if it is not normal.
H21 should already be in or near the nest very often. This is more like September or late November than April.
Greetings and see you tomorrow.

good morning everyone, Emiliano
Basically we don't know anything.
Let's give the couple a few more days, even if nothing is going according to plan this season. They've also had turbulent weeks, which affected everything a bit.
The Winter's butt will be kicked in the coming days. The temperatures will climb higher in Riga than in Schleswig-Holstein...up to 14°C.
Maybe the couple will animate again.
Today is not so hopeless compared to the last two days.
10:37 a beautiful pairing
'39 H21 can be heard heatedly
'41, '46, '47 H21 calls

14:29 In the background a landing bird.
Lighter hindquarters
Then until '43 occasionally the Jay babbles - in Goshawk sound.
'30 and again in the same place another bird, this time darker hindquarters.
Depending on the position of the tail feathers, there can be different possibilities.
I'm just wondering what's so appealing about this spot. The H's like to sit there too.

18:11 She switches to the melodic call
...it remains unanswered, at least to my ears.
Especially in these situations I miss the view of the side branches.
Surely they often sat there...in silence. While we think they are not present.
18:52, '53 H21 flutters through the woods, calling. Your calls move.
Between their calls a blackbird gave a beautiful song.
Now she's gagging... not feeling well, threatened.
Somehow I think that the H's don't hunt in their territory.
Have a nice evening, see you tomorrow (late).

Hello Polly and everyone.
From before dawn until 10:37 there were sounds from him at 8:19:32, 9:55:41 and 10:23:57.
It sounds far away at 18:57.
Seeing days like today we could presage that at any moment he arrives at the nest and lays an egg agreeing with the patients. They have us crazy.
Good night

Hello Polly and everyone
I have only registered sounds, not close to the nest.
9:46, 10:37, 10:57-58, 11:19-20
11:51:12 Now closer, he's involved with the crows.
11:58:03
As much as we want there will be nothing.
Greetings

Emiliano
The main thing will always be that they are doing well.
I close the circle:
11:51 H21
12:02, '26, 28, '30 H21
13:18, '19, 20 - 23 (babble)
14:55/56, 15:01 Jay
***
20:39 Crows roar
The calls from H21 sounded as hectic today as we feel.
We'll wait again tomorrow.
Sleep well!

Good evening everyone!
Team H seems to have shifted its radius of action - or has taken a vow of silence. However, since the crows in the terrain were not overheard in a bad mood, the presence of the H's can actually be assumed to be rare.
Heard:
09:23 H21
'26 together with crows
'27 H21
10:23 The woodpecker starts drumming.
10:38 H21 back in sound - battle with crows
11:47 A thrush sits on the edge of the nest and emits the typical warning sound at a high frequency.
Every now and then ants crawl up and down the trunk in the lower right corner ... and a 'crawling insect' walks busily across the camera lens. Maybe ants too?
19:21 - 20:15 The thrush is back and sitting on the edge of the nest.
Hope everything is ok with her...

A few days ago we had a siskin at the feeder.
Heavily puffed up, just ate or sat apathetically. He seemed to have trouble taking the food. In the evening he flew away. We didn't see him anymore.
I had a suspicion that it could be the virus (Usutus) that repeatedly afflicts numerous songbirds and kills them in large numbers.

Hello Polly.
Without being tied to the nest area, they can behave coming and going as if it were September, but I think they will be in the area and they are capricious, they may even continue to put a stick in the nest from time to time.
The sound in the recording has failed me, I have been traveling and the computer is giving me many problems.
Greetings

It's always like Christmas for us - only in summer.
Yes, too bad, but every sign of both is a good sign.
Good night sleep well!

Good morning!
He who does not dare will not win ...
The nest seems abandoned and becomes a playground for others.
07:58 The crow starts flirting around the nest tree.
08:02 comes back, breaks a twig off the side branch and places it in the nest.
Well done - here's how!

Even the little ones seem to know that the big ones are no longer to be reckoned with.
The woodpecker drums very actively today.

Emiliano , you are more informed than I am about the Goshawk's Scottish nest: today I wanted to see the current process there - the couple there is not very advanced either. Or?
Or do they generally breed a little later?

Hello Polly and everyone.
In Scotland last year they laid the first egg around April 21, this year there is still nothing.
In Holland the first egg was laid:
2020 - March 22
2021 - March 23
2022 - March 22
2023 - March 22
Greetings

Well that's straight to the point. Strict regulations. In Holland ...
Yes, I wondered whether the prolonged ups and downs of winter conditions might have had an effect.
But I dismissed the idea anyway, it's nonsense.
I've had the feeling for a long time that 'something is wrong this year'. It also written. I just can't point my finger at it.
H21 & H44 were out of the heat quickly. And I think it started from H21. She was always shy in the nest. She never really arrived.
It is like it is.
Thanks to everyone who is still somehow loyal to the couple.

Only today was a terribly quiet day.
