Goshawk nest in Riga 2023

Post by Bea »

The nest of goshawks in this location in Riga has been known since 2016 – it is believed that the breeding couple moved here from another nest about 600 metres away. In the immediate vicinity of the nest there are both industrial objects, the sounds of which can often be heard, and private houses. The tree of the nest is located in a small wet area overgrown with weeds and shrubs. The nest is built in a black alder, which grows on the edge of a ditch. The goshawk has built his dwelling on the remains of a crow's nest. The metal wires twisted in the nest still evidence that the crow was a supporter of durable building materials.

The nest was controlled during this time and the nestlings were ringed in it. This couple, and especially the female, is known among the ornithologists for their special character – she tends to behave particularly aggressively and attack people when they are just approaching the nest. On the other hand, birds are accustomed to people and equipment operating behind the fence in the nearby industrial facility and do not pay attention to them. Interestingly, at the time the female laid her first egg, very close, about 50 m from the nest, a crow couple were building their own nest. Crows are a common food item for Goshawks, but it happens that hawks do not touch other nesting birds near their nest, and they make use of this safety zone.

In 2020 breeding was successful and two nestlings were raised in this nest.
In 2021 breeding was successful and three nestlings were raised in this nest.
In 2022 breeding was successful and four nestlings were raised in this nest.

Possible first sighting of H21 on February 16, 2021.
Rings as well as V markings in the tail feathers indicate this.

viewtopic.php?p=778033#p778033

Possible first sighting of H44 on March 22, 2021.
On the same day, an adult female without rings appears in the nest (the previous nest owner Boka was suspected).
The day after, March 23, C86, father of H44.

viewtopic.php?p=783449#p783449

April 2, 2121 H21 brings prey to the nest. On this day, the couple appears together in the nest for the first time.

The stream was maintained throughout the winter season.
(Thanks to LDF for this!)

In October 2022 there were very frequent visits, mostly from H21.
But also the only female hawklet of the 2022 season H97 visited the nest tree on October 15th.

October /November
Sightings became fewer and stays were limited to lower and upper branched branches.
In November (but also in October) it was primarily foreign juvenile goshawks that used this territory and the tree for exploration.
All visits were tolerated.

All events in the summary for 2022:

2023

👣 Start here:
viewtopic.php?p=884802#p884802

Also in December there were vague but also clear sightings and calls. The pair was undoubtedly present in the territory.

24 December/1 January On New Year's Eve the extent of the fireworks on our animals became apparent.
We probably see part of the pair flying through the nest, startled, then flee into the industrial area.
Fateful for night-blind animals.
to the video:
viewtopic.php?p=884802#p884802

It can be guessed from this unsightly incident that the nest tree is possibly also used for sleeping. Even if we don't see the Goshawk.

January 22nd H21 hatches into the nest for the first time in this saison.
Her visits will temporarily become more frequent from now on.

January 24th First heated sounds of a mating offer are heard.

1st February Mating calls again

February 2nd More mating sounds after H21 has left the nest.
...
H21 puts the first branch into the nest later that day.

February 4th H44 appears in the Nest for the first time this season.
He also brings another branch.

***
An increased appearance of a youthful group begins.
At first occasionally (already in January), later several times a day. They roam the entire area. Also striking ground-level common where abouts of the pair.
Mainly, however, they are right next to the nest tree. Things lying around are smashed, metal hits, glass smashed and objects thrown.
H21 was last seen on February 12th, H44 on February 6th. for now.
Both were last seen with nesting material.
The Goshawk pair are conspicuously retiring from the hatchery. No or barely audible or visible presence.
It remains to be seen how the massive unrest will affect breeding behavior in this location.
(*as of February 23)

***

February 9th Camera undergoing maintenance. In the course of this, the perspective is re-established.

February 22nd After a long period of abstinence, H21 appears calling in the top of the nest tree.

February 23th A male juvenile, possible hatched in 2022, visits the nest.
Black ring on left, metal on right leg. An identification with S .. (not recognizable) is to be assumed.
viewtopic.php?p=888347#p888347

February 25th The pair resume activity this quiet Saturday despite a wintry onset - showing presence with calls and offering to mate close to breeding site.

February 28th to March 3rd The stream is offline due to a technical issue

March 5th The pair appear together in the nest for the first time this season.

March 7th Female juvenile Goshawk S03 visits the nest and nest tree more frequently during the day. The preparations/nest construction are now in full swing. Nest owner H21 defends itself by shouting, but shows frightening behavior while approaching the nest and fleeing.
From here: viewtopic.php?p=889686#p889686

About S03: https://forums.dabasdati.lv/viewtopic.p ... 88#p361088

March 11 Visit of a tawny owl viewtopic.php?p=890237#p890237

***

H21 & H44 stay away from the nest for breeding.

Last sighting of H21 in the nest on March 29th.
(March 30 again below the nest and on the side branches.)
Last sighting of H44 with twig in the nest on April 4th.
viewtopic.php?p=893470#p893470

Both, especially H21, remain noticed by calls and sightings in the park area.
So it can be assumed that the pair did not leave their territory.

It is not confirmed that there is breeding in a second nest.

(as of April 24th
If necessary, I will add new information from LDF.)

May 10th H44 enters the nest with prey.
Juni 14th H21 enters the nest with prey.

*** ☀️🌾☀️ ***

The resident pair H21 & H44 can be further documented here through vocal recognition in shared activity. H44 less often and only in the presence of H21. However, his partner can regularly be heard making contact calls or defending the territory.

Looking back, there were fewer visits from other Goshawks, youth and adults, compared to previous sraffles.

September 19th female Juvenile U87 visits the nest.
U87 was ringed as a chick in Riga city (Vējzaķsala).

U93 ringed as a chick in Mārupe municipality close to Riga Airport on 06.06.2023.
viewtopic.php?p=912682#p912682

October 25th Juvenile visits the nest.
viewtopic.php?p=912915#p912915

October 27th the same Juvenile visits the nest again

November 8th Another Juvenile without rings hatches into the nest.

December 5th Tawny owl visit the nest
viewtopic.php?p=914014#p914014

December 9th ... and again a Tawny owl
viewtopic.php?p=914087#p914087

The tawny owl will remain in the area until December 11th. Then at least visual and acoustic sightings will end.

December 15th A young goshawk can be seen in the nest in the evening. A black ring can be seen on the left leg, but cannot be identified.

H44 also appeared three times the next day to bring branches. H21 was present close in the tree...binding sounds can be heard.

First mating nearby heard on February 7th.

February 9th Tawny owl brings a prey.
H21 & H44 remain solid as they move forward with the season. Mating can be heard and H44 brings twigs to the nest.

February 14th There were three consecutive visits in the morning: H21 with a twig, Female U93 with enticing calls and a rising petticoat and H44 with a twig just after a mating. The mating was only heard but since H21 as well as H44 subsequently visited the nest, the mating may have been carried out by the resident pair.

12:23 A wailing seagull brushes the area close.
Crows follow her a few moments later.
There is a lot of flight movement.

12:43 Landing noise

12:46:41 ??? It sounds almost tinny.

13:06 Shouts that sound like they're being played at double speed. I ruled out a blackbird - it's a goshawk.
More calls follow.

13:13 Excited shouts in the distance

Well, H21 is very euphoric in the nest today but there is no sign of H44. Also not heard. Where does the rascal hang around? :puzzled:

15:48 quiet tone

16:08 Excited shouts in the distance

Later there was nice music (there are still)... well anyway. Which was a bit bizarre at times with the crows in the background.

H44 shows no presence.
I hope all is well and it is a natural course for the male to make an appearance only when the season begins actively. But not even a sound...no joint communication, although H21 was actively visiting the nest today?

We will see. In any case, H21 seems ready.

Hello , Polly , Bea and everyone.

H21 has owned the territory for quite some time and H44 still does not appear or give clearer signs. They may go at a different pace and are not yet synchronized, it must be taken into account that it may take about two months to lay.

H21 unfolded her skirt only just at the moment to call excited and then retracted more but not completely. She also did the movements almost like the dance but it's still early.

Thanks Bea for opening the new topic. :2thumbsup:

Goodnight everyone.

January 23.

Good morning together, Emiliano!

There were already first visitors today.
09:39 - 41 Sightseeing of a crow
Image

:D
Image

09:45 - 56 two birds can be seen at the meeting point.
They seem to eat primarily. At least one can be seen pecking. The movements are more typical of crows in my opinion but I can't say for sure.

10:40 H21 crashes into nest, calls.
She seems to have come from a close position. So it may have been in the tree before.
Image

H21 calls loudly, stands waiting ...observes something.
These claws inspire awe, fascination and respect in me at the same time.

She leaves the nest back down.

At first I suspected there would be no sign of H44 again.
But if you listen carefully:
10:39:51 There is a faint 'Gjak' from another position just before crash pilot H21 crashes into the nest. :innocent:

between 11:40 - 47 Several people are walking and talking again. It sounds very close.
Something is thrown, then the cracking tinny sound.
They run (fast) away, come running back and it gets loud again.

The meaning is not clear.
This situation already existed some time ago.
I still can't interpret the situation today. Are the actions okay?
It doesn't sound like busyness or work to me. Even today my stomach does not feel comfortable as a participatory observer.
(Video is made but not public.)

Good morning Polly and everyone. :2thumbsup:

H21 at the top showing all its distinctive signs. H44 seems to be in the shadows nearby (Look
out now!).

H21 exits to the left in a dive, in that place there must be a branch and the downward exit forces a dive, we have already seen H21 three times and H44 once spectacularly.

The couple was also present in the territory in the afternoon.
