Time out for Team H. The pair are keeping quiet in the back grandstand seats today.
Certainly heard 14:31

Well, it won't work like that... .

Meanwhile, a crow slips into the circus ring...probably watched silently by the Goshawk

... and the only sounds of the day?
I haven't heard from either of them. The second day in a row... :puzzled:

(Possibly I missed something. I was briefly distracted by repairmen. But the stream ran continuously at high volume.)

He must have imagined the meal differently... :whistling:

Big thanks to @Inga who shared the link in chat yesterday! :2thumbsup:

A chicken hawk that wandered into the attic was rescued
The manager of Riga Houses, in cooperation with the Riga National Zoo, rescues a chicken hawk that got into the attic of a nine-story house in Purvciema.

Referring to the call of the manager of Riga Houses, on January 3, under the guidance of experts from the Riga National Zoo, a bird that had wandered into the attic of a nine-story house in Purvciema was caught. According to the information provided by the manager, the guest of the attic was identified as an eagle, but when he came to help the bird return to its usual flight space, it was found that it was a hen hawk, and it was also ringed.

The hen hawk is a species of diurnal predatory bird widely found in Latvia, which is also quite often seen in urban environments. It nests in parks or in industrial areas high up in trees and feasts on various birds found in the city – homing pigeons, crows, etc. The results of the activity of this bird of prey are evidenced by piles of game feathers on the ground in some parks. Apparently, in this case too, the bird, while catching pigeons, had entered the attic of a multi-storey house, but was unable to find a way out. Birds of prey face similar predicaments, but as long as the local pigeon population finds refuge here, the raptor does not have to starve. More than fifteen years ago, the specialists of the Riga Zoo went to save the bear, who had fallen into a similar situation in his excitement. Even then, nothing harmed the bird, and very soon after being caught, the bird returned to its usual environment in the forests of Imanta.

Contacting the ornithologist Imantas Jakovljeva, who ringed this bird, revealed that the male hen hawk was ringed on May 20, 2022 in Riga, Pļavnieku forest. The bird was taken to the Riga Zoo, where it was examined, found to be good for the future and released near Lake Ķīšezer.

According to the Latvian Ringing Center, an average of 30,000 birds are ringed in Latvia every year and around 500 reports of found ringed birds are received. Bird ringing helps to study various issues of bird ecology and behavior, to obtain information about the main migration routes and wintering places of birds. Currently, one of the main research points of the Latvian Ringing Center is monitoring changes in bird populations. By recording data and knowing the changes that warn of a possible decline in the number of the species, it is possible to take effective measures to protect the species.

Ps: The stream does not load reliably. At least at the moment.

@dear triga!

Thank you for the quick information! :2thumbsup:
Yes, I was worried and was looking for the moment when the stream started to shake. I heard voices and cracks - grown-ups and level-headed activities. I was reassured...

Thanks again!

The stream shines back.

I wonder if the view into the nest is different? Lights can be seen that otherwise could not be seen in forbearance.
I don't know but something is different. Or I'm wrong.

Now we hope that Team H will pick up their enthusiasm again. :innocent:

Thanks to the night owls without closing time from LDF!

Sleep well!

Hi Polly , Tringa and everyone. :hi:

They do seem quieter but... they are like that. In a month they will be full.

Hopefully the camera will be up and running soon.

The Purvciemā chicken has been lucky, there are still a lot of healthy people left. It should be noted that a chicken of the year in January is practically in the territory where it was born.

Good night.

Good morning Emiliano, together! :hi:

The camera was rotated into the nest.
The new perspective...

The view of the forest remains with us. At least as long as the trees don't have any leaves.
Hope everyone fits into the picture.

Good work!
(By the way, I have to go to work now too. See you tonight)

Hi Polly and everyone.

The camera is already running again.
To me personally after three seasons with a wide view watching them come, go in, go out,... copulate. Knowing how long they were in the branch, what they did in it seems very poor to me. The chicks and the adults in the nest look the same and if you want you can increase it but we are going to lose a lot, they could have left the main branch and the corridor in front.

As they are still there every day at this time and nothing is done, they will end up making another nest in another part of that grove and those around it.

Until 9:30 I have not heard anything.

All the best.

True, the side branch and upper branch foothills are distinctive points/abodes of the Goshawk. Strangers/visitors as well as for the resident couple. Used in the off-season as the nest is avoided at this time in direct connection and in the active rearing season of parent stock as well as especially for the young Goshawk beginning to branch.

Maybe we'll get feedback from LDF again, which led to this step.
The vast majority of nests are put online in close-up. With additional zoom function. Is it the thinking that LDF should also enable this (to have to)? For nice photos?
Well, this transfer probably still won't live up to those claims. Always with wind good (sharp) photos are hardly possible. No matter how close we are. That probably won't change.
And it's not important. We observe behavior and events. And this wide angle was perfect for that!
Or was it a "must"?
Was it a requirement that the workspace be completely hidden...in the future? data protection etc...

We do not know it.
And maybe we're shooting too fast.
We won in the lower left and now two upper branches (albeit shorter). :D

No more hiding... 8-)

Presumably you are referring to the youth group?
Those are my concerns too. It is a new factor in the breeding area. Unusual for the breeding pair. Especially since the visits now begin in the morning and are often accompanied by roars and harsh noises.

Well, yes, it's a public area. What do you want to do?

We can only hope that the "gang" will be integrated by the H's.
If not, it will be a new enrichment of knowledge - namely that city - Goshawk have a tolerance limit.
I saw the danger for juveniles, which often remain quite flightless in the undergrowth. I don't know if it's a good combination - those vulnerable animals around people who enjoys destruction things.

?
No one can tell what exactly we're hearing - but EVERYONE please... what do you think you're hearing?

Let's keep going for a few more days.
The couple will make the right decision for themselves.

And even today, apparently, no further sign could be heard ....

Today was NOTHING.
I had a long day today and handed over the monitoring to my husband.
I hope the rascal didn't overhear anything. Or maybe ... actually it would be good.

Maybe tomorrow .... :innocent:

Sleep well! :2thumbsup:

Btw: The members of LDF will be tearing their hair out - we're just always nagging.
Sorry ....but sometimes we're right

Contact call 10:10
I think it was H44.

Unfortunately, I only just heard the call on my odyssey through the day and can't hear it again.

Near reputation which means that a move is not yet decided.

February 11th

Good morning Polly and all.

It seems that the camera has a light sensor and it doesn't look good until there is Rapla-style light.
Do we have to save energy ?
We will miss the activity of the night.

We will miss the activity of the night
...
Currently I would be happy if there was any activity at all. :rotf:
I also think the stream has been unspecified.
Perhaps the resources are used elsewhere.

In the distance there were excited shouts 11:30/31, 12:08.

I wish I could report more.
I'm looking further now (currently at 16:59) but I don't think much will happen anymore.

I hear no landing noises, no movements in the tree.
However, I also think that the microphone setting is different. Nothing sounds like before.
And today is a very stormy day.

I'm not very happy with the situation either but let's look back at last season...the pair is last minute tried and tested.
The main thing is that both are fine!

And those plaintive sounds yesterday took me terribly.
(Clearly heard in the video 13:02:36 - 41)
Unfortunately no one seems to have any idea... bzw. nobody is interested in it.

Hello Polly

There are laughs afterwards, nothing good. The Latvians who listen, perfectly know what the conversations are about.

When the trees have leaves, very little will be seen. The branch on the left is the one that will probably let us see something else since it often sounds and appears there. The sounds sound very weird and didn't even sound like Goshawk to me.

Thanks for sharing your time.

Good night.

Well, we also see young people here in the village who are adolescent and underutilized, just annoying but unfortunately also often causing damage. Classic vandalism...

In the last few weeks we have experienced hair-raising situations. I don't want to know what these hooligans dismantled just a few meters (<10m!) not far from the nest tree. The sounds were clear. Glass, metal...wood...everything was made small and thrown! There was shouting and screaming ...
The two of us (and probably only the two of us!) watch the stream so intensely that we know what's happening there.
If maintenance work was being carried out there last night, the extent should have been obvious.
I won't mention it a thousand more times...I'm angry enough as it is.

It is one thing that something like this is tolerated.
However, I could understand if the couple withdraws from the nest tree in this phase.

What I meant in the video wasn't the voices.
It was a quiet moment in comparison.

It's a plaintive beast what we hear.
And these sounds keep me busy! It can be harmless but no one takes my anxiety away.

Sleep well!

09:30 Tits eagerly collect in the nest.

'34 to hear Jay nearby
10:07 Hearing a cat in a bad mood.

10:36 H21 calls in the grove

11:05 We see a goshawk changing position in the trees.
H21 ...she chatters softly and she doesn't seem alone. Two votes! :2thumbsup:

11:12 H21 comes into the nest from the grove.
Crows follow her.

H21 seems nervous. She leaves the nest and in this new camera angle it cannot be seen whether she flies onto a branch or leaves the place entirely.
Presumably on a higher position of the lower branch.

She seems to still be there.
The crows are further up the tree.
'15 A wave of rage from the crows could mean that H21 has left the tree now.

Then suddenly it's quiet.

12:15 - 21 Soft chatter in the forest.

'26 crows are coming back
