First of all, I'm glad that a male has occupied this nest. He will find a female. If not this year, then next.
after all, there was already a female here. Very shy. Maybe it was Janika. Along with the male should she get trust to this nest again?

20:52 He sings beautiful

Hulbi Lorm wrote: April 28th, 2023, 8:55 pm Thanks, Liz. So still some days left with a certain chance. I'm so hoping for old man Kergu...

I guess, if the logistics allow it, if food became the problem for such a "late nest", another fish restaurant could open. I would gladly contribute, that's for sure.
Hulbi, Jan did not find the fish basket.
BTW: my fingers are crossed for Kergu too. :2thumbsup:

I am hopeful that this magnificent black stork male will become our Jan II, now that he decided to stay in the nest for the night.
I believe Janika was already at the nest circa 10 days ago and left after 2 minutes but maybe a first time breeding female will stumble upon this nest and pair up with him. They usually arrive later than females with a nest, so there is hope.

Although... I worry about the strange 'singing' the male was doing. This was not normal, seemed to hiss more than sing as well. Could be a raptor nearby. This hissing and defending behavior could be seen when the first male visited the nest. I worry that there might be a raptor nest or resting area nearby after Jan and Janika went missing. But we will see. I have hopes. Hope is there until a male is on the nest. If not this year then next year will bring success. It must.

Don’t keep us in suspense, Liz! What happened to those three Latvian chicks?

settles down in the nest. It's defensive behavior. But it doesn't seem like a very dangerous enemy and not a conspecific
