Black Stork Nest 2 (Jan and Janika) 2023

Black stork nest 2

https://www.youtube.com/@Kotkaklubi

The Black Stork nest is situated in Jõgeva County in Estonia. We have known this breeding territory since the late 1990s, when black storks successfully nested here for many years.

After 2004, the nest site remained empty. The male bird Tooni, who nested here at the time, moved to the adjacent territory. The nest where Tooni moved, was the first Estonian black stork nest camera in 2005-2010.

Black storks came back to the nest seen currently on the camera only a year or two ago. It is an old artificial nest. We built a new platform in the early spring of 2021.

Considering the critical situation of the black stork in Estonia, itis a small miracle that the storks came back to here.

April 18

Good Morning. :hi:

Sabsy, Treia, great to see you here.

Image
the nest stayed empty over night. Maybe the male was a resting black stork and on the way to his own nest..
he hasn't started any renovations in the whole time he's been here. I thought to myself that he probably wouldn't stay.

Hello All :hi: Liz, thank you!
What a joy to have this nest back for watching! This year can only get better!

Was this the same visitor as yesterday? I think it was... although, it looked quite "female-ish" to me. S/he stayed just for two minutes on the edge of the nest, looked around and to the ground and did not sing.

I know that plummage and the eye shape can change in a stork within half a year but this one actually looks like Janika to me.
Not only is the eye shape on point but the beak is also colored dark in the middle. Her frightful approach may be due to her experience last year when she was spooked away from the nest by humans. She may be cautious now around the nest.

It's very quiet here, where are our birds?

Edit: Could it be that there are too many predators in the area
that our BlackStorks are afraid of?

Has he come back to the nest ?
