20:54 Male is still away. more than seven hours. We will see..
Male did not come back. Why? No idea. Everything would be speculation, we don't know.
Wait what will happens

My worry is that a threat is quite often nearby. Maybe a raptor. Could that be enough to scare our new Jan away?
Will he consider this nest safe enough for chicks? Would any female consider this nest safe enough?
I wish we knew what he was seeing.

Only humans are able to drive a black stork away from a potential nesting site. Black storks are very defensive. Not even a white-tailed eagle can make them give up their nest.
They are very good at defending their nest against e.g. Goshawks and similar birds. But in this forest we mostly saw the sparrowhawk. The Black stork too is perceived as an enemy. Anything that has a bird of prey silhouette is vehemently kept away from the nest. Even the Honey Buzzard. He only eats honey and bees.

April 30
Good Morning
empty nest. It's raining
At the moment it is breeding season for all birds. they are very territorial at this time. They don't want potential enemies around them. The raven is indeed an enemy. But for the eggs. Goshawk is an enemy for the chicks. White-tailed eagle is a enemy for eggs, chicks and possibly adults. The black stork is the better flyer in the forest. He is very agile and skillful, so not so easy to hunt. so he has a chance against the WTE. The marten is an enemy predator.
I didn't see any at the nest. You can usually see them at the nest at times when the black stork is not here yet. It was well to observe at a Polish nest. However, there are now 4 eggs there.
thus he stays away for unknown reason.

to all!
A WTE is an enemy for storks, but sometimes does nothing to them(Ozols in 2016).
This nest is also dangerous because of predators living on the ground. In other nests there were many cases when a fledging storklet fell out, spent a day or even more time on the ground and then successfully returned(Tommy, Miki, Ziluka). Here storklets were killed even if they flew out(not fell!) and stayed near the nest. I wonder if storks can spread any information between each other and let others know that this nest is not safe.

asteria,
last year Jan and Janika came to the nest for another breeding season! So they are not aware of it.

Yes, a new male was here, but he is not going to stay here despite he spent in the nest a few nights. Also he might see or hear those predators himself.
