Kergu Black Stork nest was found last year (2022), but it has been there for longer. Probably even fallen down, and rebuilt again on the branches of the same aspen tree. During installation of camera I noticed that nest is only partly supported by the branches, so added some kind well visible exoskeleton to keep it more stabile (perhaps).

Nest site is situated in Pärnu county, near wind farm development area. That was the reason to track Kergu, male stork who nested here last year, as well as reason to install webcam. There are proposed some mitigation measures, like preparing better feeding conditions in other sectors of home range. Hopefully results of those measures will be visible also through webcam in time. The measures are at the moment in planning stage, yet. So if somebody has ideas for mitigation measures in that situation, those would be valuable to analyse in current situation.

Kergu has rings (incl. left leg 7047) since childhood, he has been ringed in 2011 as one of three chicks in nest situated about 10 km of current Kergu nest. Three chicks fledged in Kergu nest last year (2022) and they were in good condition during ringing. Female in this nest we do not know, most probably she is without of rings.

Before Kergu arrives, the nest was visited in April 16th by Nurme, the neighbouring tracked Black Stork male. According former tracking data Nurme checked this nest also in last two years.

Hereby one image of the nest and cam there as it looks from a side (drone photo, 4.4.2023)

This nest will require some serious renovations to be livable. I look forward to see a new owner work some magic.

:hi: Liz and All!

Nurme does not make a very determined impression... He just looks around, takes a twig here and there, sings a bit... rather like on the move.

It says about Nurme in the Bird-Map description:
"[His] territory is situated in west-central Estonia. He used artificial nest, refreshed it in spring, but did not find female to produce brood in 2021. ... In breeding season 2022 Nurme visited several nests in a fairly large territory. In one of such Nurme was captured by the trail camera together with a ringed female (V702) from Lithuania (ringed in 2020)."
So, Nurme does not have a nest of his own yet. It will be interesting to see where he'll finally settle if he finds a female this year. (Hopefully not here if Kergu has serious intentions :D )
“Animals, like us, are living souls. They are not things. They are not objects. Neither are they human. Yet they mourn. They love. They dance. They suffer. They know the peaks and chasms of being.” (G. Kowalski) Caveat: Apart from this remarkable sentence I do not agree with his philosophies.
