White Tailed Sea Eagles in Norway

We are happy to have forum member Harald Misund with us.
He sent me many photographs of the Sea Eagles he has known, and ringed over the course of about 40 years.

I shall post his photographs, but under his username, so that Harald can add text, comments etc, to the photographs.
Some of the pictures are photographs taken by his friend with a camera, GISLE NOEL. Perhaps Harald will tell us about Gisle.

The following few posts are started by me, using Harald's account. After that, he can post his own comments. I will help with posting photographs any time.

It is very interesting to see the young eagles on the ground, feathers raised and not (can we say hackles raised?).

Raised Hackles - yes, I think so. I suppose a dictionary would tell us what a hackle is!! I know the phrase but not the word itself!

I went to Alpha dictionary -" hackles" is a feeling of anger.

The Visual Thesaurus says Hackles - Dander - Scale - scurf - dandruff.

Not much help there!!

But we know what "raised hackles" means anyway - who needs dictionaries

Some information.
1.Nest tree with red circles. The first nest site was build in the upper,failed first winter and rebuild next and fall down.
Some branches stopped on next and a new nest build, after some years that hole nest fall down. I build the new nest lower with a trawler net in bottom and some rope, lay old nesting materials on and that was soon accepted.
The nest is know well camouflage, and that is good since a ski track is not more then c 150 meters away.
2. Salfjorden have many streams,rich on fish and otter. Otertue (otter marking in foreground), the mountains to right are Fallkflaug,--so come later in pictures.
3. Back to Nest tree(1)Sitting near nest 4. Ad birds nest ti left. 5.Pair at nest 6. Pair and a visiting immature (not from this nest) 8 Nest tree left Ad.male sitting.
9. Helligvær out against Vestfjorden. Near maiden flight, nest only few meter away.
10 Bliksvær (Nature reserve)Nest site below, they always wandered up on top of the isles.
11/12 Falkflaug c175 meters over sea level
13 Clodberries
14 Two stones.
15 Eider in Saltstraumen (fast tidal stream), 1370 birds 1 Nov.2008.

Gisle Noel have taken the photograph of the nest in winter. Gisle is a helpful young man in all way, and also given me a lot of help with the data. At the moment I have some problem with the data, so I will send more picture and comment, if there are any interest for it.

Sometimes animals raise their fur or feathers to make themselves look bigger, but being "very irritated" could describe that bird as well

Harald, thank you so much for sharing these pictures with us ~ just gorgeous. And many compliments to Gisle for his work with the camera.

Re Hackles - Bociany, your dictionary gives a much more likely definition. I didn;t understand why the one I consulted said dandruff, scurf etc!!
