It was a busy morning on the Loch yesterday with not one, but three osprey landing on the nest in quick succession.
Firstly, a repeat, thought to be 'UFO' - (unringed female offender) - who has consistently intruded both this season and last, followed a few seconds later by a second female.
This second osprey had a Darvic colour ring Blue 8C on her right leg - and has been identified as a 2014 bird ringed at Bywyd Gwyllt Glaslyn Wildlife - Glaslyn Ospreys. and the youngest of a brood of three. She has been seen in Senegal, Hampshire and several times on the webcam at Poole Harbour Osprey Project.
Interestingly her brother 9C who breeds in Cumbria, was sighted a few weeks ago at Leighton Moss.
An hour later another ringed osprey landed, again ringed on the the right leg with the Darvic colour ring Blue 167. This bird has been identified as a 2 year old male, ringed at a nest south of Inverness by Hugh Insley in July 2020, and again is one of a brood of three that fledged that year.
With more youngsters due to return to the country any day, you can be assured we won't have seen the last of any action on the nest.
Many thanks to Tim MacKrill at the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation, Heather at Glaslyn and Hugh Insley for the detailed and fascinating information.

Here is an interesting video that shows how our resident ospreys communicate prior to a change of incubation duty. NC0 is particularly good at 'updating' LM12's to do list.

At this point in the season we expect there to be plenty of intrusions on the nest from young osprey returning for the first time.
Let's look back today though at some of the other protagonists in the latest blog by Species Protection Officer Dani

All being well, it won't be long before we welcome our first little 'bobbleheids' of the season!
Meanwhile let's pop on our science specs to examine some fascinating egg data in the latest blog from Species Protection Officer Katie

It's starting!
You can hear NC0's tiny chick cheeping inside the egg as the first signs of hatching appear at 22:36.
It can take up to 24 hours for osprey chicks to hatch out. Keep your eyes on our live osprey webcam to avoid missing a thing! https://bit.ly/3LruvK1

Our first chick of the season has hatched!
This tiny chick appeared at 10:26, around 12 hours after we spotted the first signs of hatching. We're excited to see it feed and grow, and we're hoping it will be joined by two siblings in the coming days.

Yesterday was an exciting day filled with intruders, the first chick hatching, a near miss with a perch and the little boblet's first feed.

Here's chick number three!
NC0's final chick of the season emerged at 19:46 this evening, some 23 hours after we spotted the first signs of hatching. Read our latest blog to find out more: https://bit.ly/3LFlvkB
If you've been watching the webcam you might have spotted LM12 has an injury to his eye. Fortunately this appears to be minor and hasn't affected his ability to catch fish as he brought two perch to the nest this evening to feed the growing brood.

NC0 ate some fish, suddenly flew away with fish, and came back with empty claw. Is the fish dropped or not fresh ?
The chicks didn't eat a single bite.

Throwback Tuesday: Here is our resident male, LM12, adorning himself with moss during a pre-hatching incubation period!
No more chilling on the nest with a full brood to feed

Exciting news! The Loch of the Lowes nest was visited yesterday by tagged osprey Blue AE, also known as 'Rothiemurchus'.
Rothiemurchus is a well known osprey being one of the few birds satellite tagged by renowned conservationist Roy Dennis back in 2009, and had not been spotted since a sighting in 2017 in Senegal!
Read Species Protection Officer Bethany's blog to read all about his amazing life and migratory patterns.
A massive thank you to Tim Mackrill and the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation for confirming the sighting and providing further details.

Marks out of 10 for this gymnastic effort by NC0 in the blustery wind yesterday?
Good recovery - no-one saw you (honest)!

The young osprey family look to be going from strength to strength, with plenty hearty feeds and napping taking up their days.

We are delighted to hear from our friends at Kielder that 2019 Lowes female youngster Blue PT4 has found herself a territory and mate.
She had been frequenting the area towards the end of last season and earlier this Spring (making a bit of nuisance of herself on established nests) -so it is great to see that she now has a site of her own.
Talons crossed for eggs next year!
Many thanks to Joanna Dailey and Forest England for the blog (link below) and photos!

It's a beautiful morning here at Loch of the Lowes and with the 3 young chicks are growing quickly, it's the perfect time to undertake some 'nestorations'!
Osprey Watch volunteer Ken O'Keefe captured these fantastic shots of male LM12 bringing back moss to the nest. Next he'll be off to Ikea for scatter cushions and candles!
(Other household stores are available)
