It's been a bit of a soggy week at times here at the reserve, but it hasn't stopped plenty of action from our breeding osprey pair LM12 and NC0.
Find out what's been happening in the last blog by the Species Protection Team.

It's been an eventful week for the breeding pair of ospreys on reserve, with helicopters, a hiatus and a young pretender all adding to the drama!

All being well it won't be long before the first osprey chick completes its hatching journey! Ospreys tend to incubate each egg on average between 35-37 days before their chicks hatch.
In the past the breeding female NC0 has incubated for 36 days before the first chick has managed to break out of its shell. Could the wee one already be starting its mighty journey of wearing down the shell with their little egg tooth? Could we see our first 'bobbleheid' in the next day or two?
Stay tuned to our live osprey webcam at Loch of the Lowes reserve to follow the egg hatching journey!

t's a beautiful day here at Lowes and hopefully it won't be long before we welcome the first wee osprey chick of the season into the world.
Meanwhile, take a deep dive into this fascinating blog by Species Protection Officer Anna, examining the defensive strategies used by the breeding pair to ensure the nest is safe from unwanted intruders!

We are delighted to announce that the first chick of the season hatched at 11:59 this morning.
It emerged fully from its shell some minutes later at 12:11 and has been enjoying beautiful sunshine in the nest, couried in under its mother NC0.

With all the excitement of the hatch today and a very busy Visitor's Centre, we nearly missed posting out the latest weekly Osprey Diary blog from Species Protection Officers Anna & India!
There are some top comical facepalm moments worth checking out!

It's been quite the day on the reserve, with sunshine, lots of happy visitors and of course the first osprey chick of the season.
Watch the little one's first moments in the video below!

I'm worried about this nest. Although LM12 is near the nest, it has not brought food back. Someone on the official Facebook page mentioned that the right wing of LM12 seems to be injured... best wishes for them
I need to stop watching for a while...

We are concerned that male osprey, LM12, may have sustained an injury that is preventing him from hunting. As with many of you, our staff and volunteers are worried about what this may mean for the new chick. As we continue to monitor the situation, we will be unable to respond to comments so have disabled this function for now and will ensure any updates are shared in due course. We thank you for your patience and understanding on this.

I watched (and recorded) this webcam today. The male is not bringing any fish so far. The female is calling more and more intensely, the male is also coming at longer intervals, but has no fish with him.
I see you have already linked something that explains the reason.

~ 19:44 finally male comes with fish, female flies away with the fish for 37 minutes, male on the nest doing nestwork, chick begging for food, female comes back with the rest of the fish but doesn't feed the chick. Instead she sits down on eggs and chick again

~ 20:50 The male comes back to the nest, takes the remaining fish and flies away with it. The female protests. The fish is gone and the chick didn't get a bite as far as I can see.

~ 21:09 male is back with a piece of fish, female takes it and leaves, but comes back 20 seconds later. She eats the fish for some minutes on the nest, then leaves again. One minute later back, eating again. And she leaves again and back again, eating. The male leaves. The chick was still not fed.
~21:58 female eats from the fish that's lying on the nest. No feeding of the chick.
The chick moves and makes soft sounds. I don't know if it is weak. Shouldn't it be starting to be weak? I cannot judge that. How long can they manage well without food?

It's been a time of highs and lows on the reserve, with the hatching of the first chick on Saturday lunchtime, but the growing realisation that the male LM12 was carrying an injury and unable to hunt.
It was a huge relief therefore to watch LM12 finally bring in a fish to the nest after some 87 hours since his last delivery.
Both adults had a much needed feed and the osprey chick managed to receive a few bites in the early hours.
After spending a few hours making short flights around the reserve this morning, LM12 has managed to bring in a second whopping fish. NC0 has wasted no time in giving the chick its first full feed.
These are all much more encouraging signs than a few days ago when LM12 was unable to hunt at all - it's still early days yet, but we are keeping our fingers and talons crossed for continued positive progress.
