We have 9 brand new ducklings here Loch of the Lowes.

It won't be long before our osprey chicks take their first flight. Older chick LP8 certainly came close today with this 'helicopter' effort onto the webcam post. They surveyed their kingdom from a new perspective for around 20 minutes before managing a fairly controlled landing back onto the nest.
When do you think they will have the courage to take their first proper flight?

Just like its elder sibling, osprey chick LR0 fledged today at 55 days old. The wind was ideal for a 'helicopter' up to the camera post, and then at 13:55 the youngster launched into the skies for its first full flight. A quick tour of the reserve and LR0 landed back on the nest in style.
There's sure to be lots of action around the Loch as the young pair test their wings out and master the art of flight. Pop down to Visitors Centre where the hides providing excellent viewing each day from 10:30am - 5pm.

EDIT: It seems dear NC0 is still here, after a three day hiatus! More to come in a new post!
It's hard to believe it has come to that time in the season when the skies at Loch of the Lowes begin to go quiet, as one by one our osprey family embark on their monumental journeys to warmer climes in West Africa, or perhaps southern Spain.
We are confident that our female osprey NC0 has now left, having last been seen on Sunday evening.
We can (probably) expect the youngsters to head off one by one over the next week or so, followed lastly by the male.
Fly high and strong NC0. May the winds carry you and the fish be plentiful.

It seems that our female NC0 is indeed still in the area! After a three day hiatus, no doubt bulking herself up with fish for imminent migration, she briefly visited the nest to drop of a WHOPPER of a fish for the youngsters.
What followed was a tug o' war of epic proportions!
She has been seen again visiting the nest this morning, the question is when will she really go!?

We had a ringed intruder land on the nest on Wednesday morning, Blue 8C, a 2014 female osprey from Glaslyn - who visited us earlier in the season. Her arrival fooled our youngsters into thinking their 'breakfish' had arrived!
After a good 5 minutes, youngster LR0 chased her off, before the tables were turned and Blue 8C gave the chick a run for its money.
Lowes female Blue NC0 has not been seen since 11th August and is assumed to now be well on her migration route south.

The young ospreys are still hanging about the nest, 'chancing their wings' for that last final fish before heading off on their maiden migration south to sunnier climes for the winter. It really could be any day now that they depart. Find out what they have been up to in the latest osprey diary;

The egyptian geese have successfully raised a gosling. The gosling is getting close to the size of the adult female. There is very little difference between male and female egyptian geese other than their sound (male hisses and female honks); so it might be some time before we know the sex of the gosling.

After over 5 months of near constant osprey action, the Loch has finally fallen silent, as the family embark individually on their epic 5000km migration. Male LM12 was last seen on Fri 26th August, with youngsters LR0 and then LP8 last seen on Sat 27th.
(Note that the webcam will be switched off temporarily today to enable some conservation work to be undertaken in the area).
Fly high you beauties, fly high! Until next time...

On the 16th August, a female osprey was seen fishing over the river Wampool in Anthorn, Cumbria. She was reported as having a blue and white Darvic ring on their left leg which read ‘NC0’. She was spotted by Sam Northwood who reported the sighting to Tim Mackrill, who verified her identity.
